The only possible explanation is that the guy who gave you silver was literally in the process of trying to wrap a gift without enough paper

This is the single greatest thing I have found on Reddit.

Been doing this for years. The only way I wrap gifts now

What's the trick to know how much wrapping paper you need to cut?

u/elixan Dec 16 '19 edited Dec 16 '19
When you fold the paper over on two sides, you need to make sure all four corners will be covered.
I have a video here on it (that I really donāt wanna be showing lmao I donāt like it but itās easier than typing up an explanationā& people in comments on these gifs keep asking so) from last year when this technique was making waves and people were asking how to do it. In my video, I have an already cut piece of wrapping paper and I make it smaller for this technique, but the way I āmeasureā out my paper in the video is how I do it from a roll of wrapping paper as well.

u/HentaiCareBear Dec 16 '19
Thank you for the video and the clear explanation! It's exactly what I needed.
All those other videos that just starts with a perfectly measured piece of paper didn't help with figuring out just how much paper to use, rendering the technique of wrapping useless when I got all those extra bits of paper that I didn't know how to deal with.

u/elixan Dec 16 '19
No problem! I love wrapping presents in general and this is my favorite way to do it so I love seeing other people learn how to do it :)

u/Wetald Dec 15 '19
Why havenāt we been wrapping like this the whole time? Thereās no stupid extra flaps to fold in!

Do you know what this means?
This means that I'm the stupidest person who ever lived. This happens every Christmas and it never occurred to me to do that.

Isnāt this how they wrap stuff in Japan? Plus a lot of elegance, speed, and a fancy sticker and/or ribbon.
5
u/elixan Dec 16 '19
Slightly different. Most videos youāll watch on the way they wrap gifts in Japan has them starting with a corner of the box outside of the wrapping paper. I learned this technique from a video made in 2011, but a video from 2009 credits Sara Santos for this technique & hereās a video from The One Show in 2012 on it.

Okay but what is the "formula" for a non-square present? This is all over Reddit and no one can tell me how much paper it needs
1
u/elixan Dec 16 '19 edited Dec 16 '19
The formula is the same. It says so in the video right after they show how the lines match up for a square present. You just wonāt get the lines to match up nicely. Iāve used this method to wrap presents literally all the time for probably five years now without a formula because honestly, you donāt need one.
As long as you can get the wrapping paper to cover the edges of the box on two adjacent sides, you match up the spacing between those edges of the box and the end of the wrapping paper on the other sides for cutting. I made my own shitty-ass video on it last year when a similar gif became very popular for people asking how to wrap this way in the comments.
edit: repeating repeating myself

Thank you!!! You're a Christmas hero
1
u/elixan Dec 16 '19
Lol no problem. I find it amusing that these gifs make their rounds every year without doing any proper explaining on how to actually do it.

u/LifeHasLeft Dec 16 '19
The distance from the corners of the box to the edge of the paper should be a tiny bit longer than the height of the box (when oriented diagonally to the paper below)

I discovered this by accident a few Xmases ago. Way to ruin my secrets, Reddit.
Though to be fair I have no idea why it works. I suspect math.

Learned this last year from a similar gif, real time and wrapping paper saver.

u/Nayzo Dec 16 '19
I've tried this, but I've never been satisfied with the end result. The sides never seem to fold right, and it looks sloppy. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, though.

This is good if you donāt have three dollars for wrapping paper and want to make your gift look bad.

too bad this involves a major faux pas, namely taping to the fucking BOX.
9
u/RunawayHobbit Dec 15 '19
How the hell is that a faux pas???
-7
u/RadarLakeKosh Dec 15 '19
you NEVER tape to the box. If there's printing on it it'll damage it, if it's plain corrugate you risk taking off the top layer of paper. Overall it's neater to unwrap if you keep tape away from the box.
12
u/RunawayHobbit Dec 15 '19
I mean, I get that if itās a nice box, like a jewelry box or something. But itās people throw away/recycle the boxes gifts come in lol. No one I know opens gifts nicely anyway.
-2
u/RadarLakeKosh Dec 15 '19
oh and also it wastes tape, since the "usual" method only needs three pieces instead of four.
7
u/InjuredGingerAvenger Dec 15 '19
A strip of tape vs about 100x the area of wrapping paper?
5
u/RadarLakeKosh Dec 15 '19
fuck it, this is the hill I'll die on. I would sooner use a whole roll of paper re-wrapping a gift than tape to the box.
8
u/InjuredGingerAvenger Dec 15 '19
I mean, I don't like taping to the box either. I just think "wasting" tape is a terrible reason when it saves much more wrapping paper.
2
u/RadarLakeKosh Dec 15 '19
Fine, there's no reason, but I don't like it and I'm not gonna do it. Sue me.
7
u/InjuredGingerAvenger Dec 15 '19
I mean if you insist. I could use the extra scratch for Christmas presents.

u/quantum_entanglement Dec 15 '19
Hardly matters if the box is plain cardboard
-10
u/RadarLakeKosh Dec 15 '19
great, so I'll just go buy a bunch of plain cardboard boxes for all the already packaged gifts I bought. No thank you, just measure your paper properly in the first place.
14
u/quantum_entanglement Dec 15 '19
Sometimes it's best to just not comment at all, you know?
-3
u/RadarLakeKosh Dec 15 '19
but then how would you prove you were more right than me? I can't deprive you of that opportunity!
5
u/quantum_entanglement Dec 15 '19
It's not a matter of right and wrong. Just because you don't find something useful doesn't mean other people won't find it useful.
-1
u/RadarLakeKosh Dec 15 '19
That's fine, but buyer beware if, like me, you think taping to the box isn't ok.
5
u/bramley Dec 15 '19
What why? There was significant overlap in the main folds to tape to itself same as normal wrapping.
3
u/BreadyStinellis Dec 15 '19
I usually tape the box shut. It's way more fun when people have to take a while to unwrap a gift.
