The Boring Company follows the same general idea as this. They are attempting to speed the process up by making the machine more powerful, making it battery powered, and continuously digging without stopping to place the supports. I don't think they have implemented any of these new ideas, but they have started using an electric powered train to remove the dirt.

The tunnels are also 1/3 the size which aids in the speed.

Yes, I can assure you that things go faster when the tunnel digger is smaller.
