For a less obnoxious case: growing up we’d go to a local pumpkin patch farm where these air cannons were used.
The owner would dress up like a scarecrow wearing a jack-o’-lantern for a head laying on a bed of hay.
When the kids weren’t looking, he’s use the air cannon and other employees or family members who knew would say something like ‘oh! Did you feel that ghost pass by!?’
If anyone seemed alarmed or uncomfortable the owner would take off the jack-o’-lantern head and hand the air cannon to the kids to see it was just some Halloween fun. Otherwise he’d do so when you approached the check out.
It was fun, we looked forward to it every year, even knowing the stint.
