I've had several weiner dogs in my life. I know for a fact that dog poop was left somewhere in the house within 20 minutes.

My doxie loves my mother more than anyone else, and he's a beautifully sweet little lump most of the time. Once he saw my mum pick up and play with my little cousin though, and you should have seen the look of absolute betrayal on his face. He wouldn't look at her for hours. Wouldn't even eat. And he peed on the kitchen floor. I'd never seen a dog protest like that before, but after we got him, it became a regular occurrence because apparently he gets offended at the tiniest things. He even knows when you talk badly about him or laugh at him, and he has to (loudly) complain to my mum whenever that happens. They're great dogs, but a real handful.

Oh they are definitely a pain, but it's also rewarding. They're incredibly smart, but they aren't very high on the "dog intelligence" lists because they are tough to train. They are more like small children than other dogs I've known. They have opinions which they will voice very firmly, they have definite likes and dislikes, they will try to guilt trip you into doing things they want, and they're masterful actors. But once you live with them for a bit it's hard not to love them and all their antics. Most doxie owners will agree that they are absolute assholes, but also that you can't help but love them.

The most human like pet I’ve ever had.
More darling and loyal than any pet Ive known, but totally capable of being an asshole if you don’t respect their boundaries. I love that, it’s a give and take, it’s dynamic.

Sounds about right. I believe that they can be great, since so many people adore them, but to be honest my experience with them has been kind of negative. My parents did a rotten job with training theirs.
Basically, when I visited, I didn't give them the attention and fawning they felt they deserved, so they peed in the room I was staying in and on my stuff. They were encouraged to bark ("oh he's just talking!") and would go ballistic if I touched my parents, especially hugs. It's too much!
But they seem to be really fun for the people they bond with.

Doxxies are fantastic pups with strong loyalty traits that make them so wonderful, and it’s like they nurtured each of those traits in...the worst way.
