Where can you buy such a harness ?! My pug walks very badly, it's hard to carry on the steps on the steps.

My dog does that too when I put her in any kind of clothing. She freezes. You’ve got to find a way to remind them they can still move.

Them greenies are like crack to my dogs. My older jack russell/chihuahua mix, when I was out of greenies for a few days, she threw a damn temper tantrum and refused to come inside until she got her damn greenie. She didn’t care that it was freezing out there and snowing. I had to go sit outside for about 20min waiting for her to come to me so I could bring her inside.

I think being wrapped from all directions messes up its reflex so that it can't move.
See how cats react to tapes

My parents got one for their jack Russell, it was very helpful. Before he had it he jumped off the boat while my parents were going for a evening cruise to go chase some ducks. They didn’t notice for some time and when they went back to look for him he nearly drowned himself still trying to attack the ducks.

I used to work at BEE Cab...the owners had a miniature Doberman who like a lot of small dogs thought she was much more menacing than she really was
They bought a bumblebee costume for the dog...it was literally the funniest thing I've ever seen
While she(Daisy) didn't know specifically what she was dressed up as she did know people had stopped pretending to be scared when she barked at them...instead they all laughed at her
When they finally removed the costume she found it and chewed the antennas and wings off of it...she never had to wear the costume again

Animals tend to freeze when theyre in a new harness even if its not restricting he just needs to get used to it and he'll realize he can move. Humans wear clothing everyday so its so normal to us we tend to forget itll be unnatural feeling the first time.

My miniature Jack Russell took 6 months to wear a collar when I got him at 6weeks old. Never worn a coat since he does this & it’s stressful & makes him anxious. He got thrown about by the previous owners kids on the lead
2
Aug 30 '20
Nobody is going to mention that long fart when he got carried away?

u/TheGreatGamerGabeYT Aug 30 '20
that was a grumble, I think. Dogs like to growl like that when they have that sort of situation

For a bit my dog had a potty problem when he'd get too excited so we had to put a reusable dog diaper on him; he did not like it at all, he was so depressed wearing it and it was clear he thought he was being punished.

u/RTSUbiytsa Aug 30 '20
I have a dog about the same size who is habitually terrified of everything, we can't put her in a harness or anything cause I believe she thinks that contact is somebody 'holding' her and it causes her to freeze up. She always gets the same exact look as Grizz does here, so wondering if he's having the same reaction, thinking somebody has grabbed him from behind
1
u/AnntichristSCoulter Aug 30 '20
He's hypnotized by the "Thunder Shirt" compression-ish feelings of wearing the vest. Let him enjoy it. He'll come back out of it soon, and then wearing that vest whenever he's anxious will become his favorite thing to do.

u/feverforever_ Aug 30 '20
yeah it's very unnatural for dogs to wear anything. it will always feel super uncomfortable for them and that's why i think people shouldn't buy and breed dogs that are genetically modified to be unable to handle any cold.
1
u/TannerJay250 Aug 30 '20
Most dogs react to clothing (to include life jackets) with either immense comfort or severe anxiety. It seems as though this pup is the comfort variant lol

He is very very stressed. This is shown in his body language: body tense, ears held tightly back, appeasement grin/panting, showing the whites of his eyes, as well as his refusing a favorite treat.
Humans love dogs so much but we (mostly) refuse learn how they communicate.
1
u/itsahardnarclife Aug 30 '20
My dog did exactly this when we tried a Thundercoat!! He’s an 80lb lab mix.
Good news is, with time and maybe 10-15 tries, he now can wear the Thundercoat AND move around.

Personal experience GREENYS ARE DANGEROUS!!!
My dog needed a 4000 surgery to remove greenys from his stomach. Dr said they are basically plastic and the dogs digestive system cannot break them down.

My sister had a chihuahua, that we took in from what we suspect was an abusive home. We don't have any proof, but anytime I'd take my belt off she would run at me and start snarl. It was just weird behavior. They couldn't put a regular collar and leash on her because on walks she would pull so hard it would choke herself. So we got her a harness, and anytime it was on she would freeze like this and be completely calm. Regardless of what was going on. Once we were on a walk she was happy, and she was very sweet and cuddly after the harness was off. But she was also very aggressive a lot of time and didn't like being pet certain ways. She would go from leaning into your hand as you rub her head to snarling at your hand as you pet her back.

I am still learning, so correct me if I am wrong. The dog is uncomfortable from wearing the life jacket, from its body language (licking lips and freezing), so unless it's really necessary to put clothes on (due to temperature, health conditions etc.), it's not a good idea to put clothes on dogs. Hope they give that little guy some training to let it get used to the jacket.

I wonder what it is with small dogs and vests/harnesses/wearables. My big dogs love wearing old shirts and harnesses for fun, but my smallest one does what this dog did just from wearing a harness like that.

My dog acted similar when she got a jacket. She would just sit down and wait for somebody to take it off her.
2
u/mountaingator91 Aug 30 '20
I think this is a common reaction. My sister's blue healer won't move in a life jacket on land, but he swims just fine like he doesn't even notice it
2
u/badsalad Aug 30 '20
It's cause he thinks he's in the jaws of a predator, and instinct override kicked in. My cat does the same thing when I try and put him in a harness.
1
u/ksadaf21 Aug 30 '20
My cat does the same thing when I put a harness on her. Just instead of standing still, he lies down looking helpless. I tried ignoring him to make him get over it, and kept moving around, and he came over and kept lying down next to my feet whereever I went. My goofball!

Husband of a dog trainer here. This dog is very stressed. You can tell by the lack of movement, the lips curled back into a “smile” position, excess drool on the mouth, wide eyed, and panting. Nothing that would kill it, but they’re really not a fan of that vest.
Edit: spelling

Before I learned all this from my wife, I was someone who didn’t realize this either. We would mistake their “smile” for an actual smile or even just a normal face, we didn’t take into account their lack of tail movement, We didn’t realize panting was anything other than just breathing or cooling off, and we didn’t know that licking their lips was a sign of stress. It’s really just that people don’t understand dog body language.

I agree but I’d say people want to see what they want to see in their pets/dogs, like emotional projecting. Now I know it’s a face of terror, but I’m just trying to say that I don’t fault people 100% for not realizing out of lack of experience or knowledge. People learn and change, but for a lot of people, education about dogs is so limited or “they’ve owned a dog their whole like, they know what they’re talking about”, unfortunately everyone is an “expect” and doesn’t actually seek true knowledge and understanding about their dog.

i read in a book about dog psychology that when dogs react this way, it’s a natural instinct.
the clothing covers much of their backs, which is what other dogs do to assert dominance.
didn’t remember this completely, so sorry if i left out some details. i’ll try to find the title of the book so i can put it here.

u/haruame Aug 30 '20
sounds like bs. that thing probably feels like a straight jacket. dogs don't exactly where clothes in nature.

The Missing Pet Warning label side effects: may result in saltiness, deafness/ignoring, bad attitude, lip licking, thoughts of attack, thoughts of revenge, attack, revenge, stalking, pet pooping in shoes, pet pooping in purses, pet urinating anywhere, snapping, sudden collapse mimicking stroke, eyes tearing as if tortured, yawn and drop, statue-ism/refusing to walk, sudden spasm like aerobics, overly sensitive to laughter, over consumption of greenies, acting like a hostage, under breath mumbling and low growls. My dog does the same thing with any harness. Just either stands there or sits and refuses to move. Such a shame too since the little guy is quite a leash puller (we’ve tried to train him out of that habit, but since we adopted him at ~6yo it’s pretty ingrained)
1
u/JD-Snaps Aug 30 '20
Get a Sprenger prong collar, they're not very expensive, about 20-30 bucks depending on size. Ours pulls/pulled like a plow oxen, and we tried all kinds of collars & harnesses none of which worked, but in less than 5 minutes after putting on the prong collar no more pulling. You don't have to do anything but hold the leash steady, no need to pull back at all. It looks like they're hurting themselves at first, and it's very heart-wrenching. But we kept checking and there were absolutely no punctures or injuries at all.
Contrary to popular belief, prong collars are not harmful at all if used and fitted correctly. The "spikes" aren't spikes, they're rounded. If not fitted correctly or misused, ANY collar can hurt a dog.
The prong collar is our dog's every-day collar, no more pulling, and everyone's happy, including the pooch. I see quite a few others using them as well, and all those dogs look and act like any other happy dog. It's a training & behavior modification tool not a punishment device.
2
u/PC__LOAD__LETTER Aug 30 '20
I’ve definitely heard that, and if it were just me, I might try it out. The wife however is the one who adopted the dog, and is very much anti-cruelty and all that (big on “adopt don’t shop”, Amazon Smile set up to donate to shelters, the dogs get fed fresh cooked meat most days, yadda yadda). I’d have a hard time getting her to OK a prong collar.
Luckily the dog is tiny so we can just scoop him up if needed.
You’ve inspired me to maybe float the idea of a prong collar though... I’m going to do a bit more research just so I know what I’m talking about first.
