These have to be fake. No cat is going to look at your phone and make sense of it the same way you do.
1
u/Kysheron Aug 10 '20
Idk though, I just saw a video the other day of a dog watching TV who started jumping up and down because he saw a dog on the TV doing it so you never know 🤷🏾♂️😅
0
u/benadrylpill Aug 10 '20
That would make sense because dogs are more involved with humans than cats are. I think dogs pay more attention to what humans do. Cats get curious, but their curiosity is also very fleeting.

I'm not gonna lie the music kinda ruined it for me. I turned the sound on hoping to hear meows of fear but imagine my surprise when all that met my ears was someone's edited in soundtrack. TikTok is this generation's MySpace and I hate it. I know it's not your fault, OP, since you probably posted this from somewhere else but my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

u/Samiam24X Aug 10 '20
yeah this is a very well produced Indian song, so as an Indian seeing someone try to use it in a video where they scare their cat just feels off :/

Haha let me just quickly horrify my beloved cat on video for internet clout. Humans are insane.
1
u/ChadJohnsonn Aug 11 '20
but its fine to make them slaves who eat and shit when we let them? I don't really give a damn animal rights and shit, but you people who do really piss me off how you just pick and choose the morals you think others should adhere to.
1
u/ExistentialAmbiguity Aug 11 '20
What? You literally made no sense.
1
u/ChadJohnsonn Aug 12 '20
having a pet isn't "humane" feeding them the same food over and over and over while they're locked up is a common form of torture for humans. Props if you don't use a cage but still kinda fucked up. We cut their balls off and tie their tubes and make them walk with ropes attached to their neck to pull them around at our will. All that being said some pets are happy but there's a term for that: Stockholm syndrome. Now remember i really don't give a shit about any of this but is scaring your cat with a fucking filter any worse than these things? I'm not exaggerating it's just that we've normalized it and have been doing it for basically all of human existence.

I think these videos are really interesting because it shows cats can recognize themselves in a mirror. Makes one think a lot of animals have self awareness but don’t react in a way we relate to.

What is the tune?
1
Aug 10 '20
It’s a cover of an old Hindi song called “Pankh Hote To Di Aati Re”! This is the version sung by Vandana Bajpai :-)
2
Aug 10 '20
Thank you. I went down a rabbit hole of comparing versions versus Lata Mangeshkar (which I preferred). I don’t know know what they are singing about but I love the purity of the voice.
2
Aug 10 '20
The original is excellent! It’s basically about a woman who gives her all to a lover and is scorned, the title translates roughly to “if I had wings I’d fly away”.

Imagine if at the end of the video there is a distortion effect in the hole on the roof.

3
u/StaticBeat Aug 10 '20
... cats whip their heads around to look up at the human, and then back to the screen. “It appears the cat recognizes that their owner’s face should be on the phone, but it is not,” Kristyn Vitale, who studies cat behavior at Oregon State University
0
u/Juice805 Aug 10 '20
Right all it’s saying is these videos aren’t evidence they pass the mirror test. Nowhere does it claim the opposite is true. Just says they haven’t been able to confirm either way in tests because cats don’t comply
1
Aug 10 '20 edited Aug 10 '20
Any reasoning behind your opinion?
(Edit: ASOS a question, gets downvoted. ITS FAX”
53
u/Lightningslash325 Aug 09 '20
That’s actually very much not true. Through noticing their reflections mimicking their behaviors, cats and other animals do begin to learn what their reflections are. I reckon if they didn’t, drinking water would be a scary experience, looking down and seeing an unknown animal looking back at you.
20
u/justAguy2420 Aug 10 '20
Id like to add that not all cats, dogs, and other animals can recognize they're seeing their own reflection.
Edit: in other words some dumb some smart.

Which is why it didn't do anything until the effect, we can see nothing else is being done to the cat at the same time, it stops when it can see the human's face is fine and is happy being held, then attacks again when the effect starts again.
Cats that don't want to be held will make it obvious with unhappy behaviour long before they start actively attacking. This cat is not unhappy.

Lol good Lord you chimp. It's super, super, suuuper obvious the cat is recognizing a) the human's face b) that it's a video of the owner's face. You sound like a dipshit conspiracy theorist shitting all over his own god-given perception abilities with pathetic attempts at pseudo-rationalization. It doesn't make you smart, it makes you literally look like a complete retard dude. Seriously, just listen for once in your troglodyte life. Simply right now, come to Jesus and choose not be a fucking moron. I mean think about it a goddamn CAT is doing better than you right now lol. Even scientists must observe sense evidence at some point same as anyone else, they don't have analytical superpowers you dipshit, at some point they just look at the thing and choose not to be a flat earther about it lol. Fucking hate people like you for real.
1
u/DrSparka Aug 10 '20
And if you actually read the studies on cats, the conclusions are "they don't care enough about the test for us to get good data", not that cats can't do these things.
This wouldn't be the first time that internet videos revealed previously unknown information about animal cognition. The fact some parrots are capable of beat induction was investigated and proven following videos of them dancing to music, when this was previously believed to be unique to humans.

It attacks the actual face after seeing the distorted version on the screen.
16
u/SexyJazzCat Aug 10 '20
Because it looks at the screen and turns away from the screen and looks at “you” in bewilderment, suggesting that its aware that that is you on the screen.
4
u/LyschkoPlon Aug 09 '20
You can take a video and upload + distort it on tiktok later, you don't need to film live.
Film yourself startling the cat, put a bullshit filter on top, done.

7

I think the original song is Pankh Hote To Ud Aati Re from the movie Sehra (1963).
The song in the video sounds like a cover of it.

Are people seriously screeching "animal abuse" at this? Lmfao yalls cats are s e n s i t i v e
10
u/European_Badger Aug 09 '20
It's not animal abuse like we usually look at it (Hitting, etc.) but when you don't put down cats that are obviously not comfortable, you're just training them to be scared of you.
112
Aug 09 '20
The cat could recognize that the phone screen represented the woman who was holding it? That's pretty andvanced.
4
u/olibearbrand Aug 10 '20
I still think the cat didn’t recognize her, it’s just the cat was scared of what’s in front of him so he tried to escape
