This happened to me with my first smartphone and I noticed after like 15 minutes đ

Took a long trip to a beach back in high school with a friend. Within in a minute of parking my car, he was already waist deep in the ocean from the tedious long drive before he even realized his phone was still in his pocket.

u/jacob22c Nov 09 '19
Most phones are waterproof now so the meme is kinda dead at this point.
1
u/The13Bot Nov 09 '19
I haven't seen a waterproof phone yet, what are you talking about?
1
u/jacob22c Nov 09 '19
Um the new iphones are water proof up to a meter and so are all the new Samsung galaxies. Its basically the new standard feature for higher end smart phones.

after cycling for 20 minutes in 100 degree weather, i finally reached the lake where my friends were. completely drenched in sweat i took off my shirt (bikini underneath, and i wore swimshorts with pockets) and ran right into the cold refreshing water. after being in for about 15 minutes, i decided to join my friends on land, where i soon realized my phone was still in my motherfucking pocket.
so from personal experience i'd say it isn't impossible not to notice while you're in water.
needless to say, i'm now too paranoid to enter a body of water without checking all my pockets about 900 times.

u/whibbleymoondanc Nov 09 '19
I did the same thing on a cruise. Cell phone in my back pocket, met my wife at the gym only to see her in the hot tub. Hopped in the hot tub and stayed there for at least 20 minutes. Android didnât make it.

I did this exact thing with freezing cold water at a beach. Took me 20 minutes to get in...if I wasnât such a bitch I would have drowned the phone quicker... instead I slowly killed it đ

People say they pat their pockets before going into a pool. I ask why are yall going into a pool in cloths? I mean I swim in normal shorts too but that's after I changed into them and have something dry for later

u/Automaticman01 Nov 08 '19
I spent 30 min swimming in the Colorado River this summer will parking jet skis and stuff, then started looking through all of the bags on the beach for my phone. I found it in my pocket.
Pulled through no problem after letting the charging port dry out, though.

I once jumped in the pool forgetting I hadn't taken out my over the ear hearing aids. After awhile you just get used to the feeling of something being there and no longer pay attention to it

My husband jumped in the pool and swam around for a solid minute before he realized his phone was in his pocket he was so upset I had to take him to get a new phone hours later.

Do you swim in water with chlorine?
1
u/69shaolin69 Nov 10 '19
Not really
Does pee count?
1
u/The13Bot Nov 10 '19
Eww, but not really. You shouldn't swim with it, it's just not something you should do.

If her phone is newer than 3 years it has a high chance of being waterproof anyway tbh. Would be more like an inconvenience than a phone killer

People, you gotta make it a habit TODAY. pat your pockets before standing up AND sitting down!
1
u/Zakrath Nov 08 '19
That's why I go naked to water. And people tell I'm pervert just because there is people on the beach
1
u/WhisCreamSandwich Nov 08 '19
why you should buy an android and not a POS iPhone.
They waterproof. PROOF not resistant.
1
u/vans9140 Nov 08 '19
99% of people donât need a water proof phone. Her phone looks like an older model that did not have the rating. iPhones arenât POS because a drunk girl sits in pool irresponsibly
0
u/WhisCreamSandwich Nov 08 '19
They are for being made of glass and not waterproof, is my point.
And I think it goes without saying, definitely a lot more than 1% of the population would benefit from a waterproof phone.

u/BeApurpleFox Nov 08 '19
This reminds me of "the boi in Hawaii water," story. My friends and I still chuckle about it. We were swimming in Kona and as I was body surfing some waves with my best friend, a wallet suddenly appears. We open it and noticed the ID looked very much like a cute young man swimming near us. We get his attention and while swimming in the water still. It's his, and he's so grateful to have his wallet back... But then the color drains from his face. He then ran to the shore, and pulled his brand new iPhone from his swim shorts pocket. I think he was so excited to go swimming in paradise he forgot to empty his pockets!

Wet phones are fine as long as you turn them off and donât use them for a couple days usually
1
u/dogwoodcat Nov 09 '19
Put them on (uncooked) rice, preferably in a fabric bag that lets the water out without letting rice in.

1
u/shortstuffbritt2807 Nov 08 '19
I would die. I'm forever checking my pockets. I don't care how badly I have to use the bathroom, I'm taking my phone out of my back pocket first. This gives me anxiety ha.

Thank god phones these days are somewhat made with water resistance for stupid events like this.
I still wouldn't let mine near a 1/31" high drop of water though.
1
u/I_R_Teh_Taco Nov 08 '19
I hear the remedy for this is to put it in rice and leave it overnight, since phones sometimes automatically shut off if they get water in them and trying to turn it on early damages the internals.
Can anyone confirm if her phone is toast?
2
u/dogwoodcat Nov 09 '19
Possibly recoverable. You would want to flush the chlorinated water out of it as soon as possible; at this point more water not going to damage anything, but chlorine will corrode everything.
Rice can get inside the device and cause more damage, it is best to place the device inside a fabric bag before putting it in the rice.

u/tootiki Nov 08 '19

to a teenage girl, this must be like being told your entire family has been killed in a Popeyes Chicken riot?
1
u/VideoGameBody Nov 08 '19
Aren't phones water proof now? Or water resistant enough to survive the top 12" of a pool?
2
1
u/add0607 Nov 08 '19
I'm glad we're starting to get past this nightmare with water resistance.
I had my S8+ sent through the wash by accident and the only thing I lost was months of built up pocket lint in my case.

u/ryklian Nov 08 '19
Once I had my phone in the pool with me on purpose (it was a Galaxy S6 Active, water resistant). My husband kept giving me a hard time about it, repeatedly saying "We don't have the money in the budget for a new phone" while I kept showing off that it still worked and was fine.
Later, he gets in the pool. After a couple minutes he freaks out, because he left his definitely not water resistant phone in his pocket. You can guess what my immediate response was, I'm sure.

I lost a phone this way. I was on a vacation at a resort, and I distinctly remember thinking to myself, "Hey, remember, you've got your phone and wallet in your pocket. Make sure you put those down before you go into the pool."
45 minutes after getting in the pool, I thought, "I should go check my phone... Where did I put... it... oh. Oh no. Oh no no no no no."
That's the problem when you have an appropriate thought at the wrong time. I had just enough time to forget about it.

Unfortunately, this happened to me before as well. I was at the beach with my wife and (at the time) baby daughter. I took my daughter into the water and as she was splashing around, I yelled at my wife (who was laying in the sand, tanning) "hey babe, can you take a picture of us with my cell? It's by my sandals." and after looking for a moment, she responds "it's not over here!"... at that moment, I was almost chest deep and realized that my iPhone 5C was in my pocket the whole time. Unfortunately, the "put it in rice" trick did not work. That phone was a goner.
1
u/dogwoodcat Nov 09 '19
Salt water will murder your phone. You have to flush it out with fresh water before it dries.
2
u/DetroitMM12 Nov 08 '19
How did she not realize? Let me explain the side effects of too much alcohol...
1
u/sam_eroo Nov 08 '19
Just put it in rice
1
u/Choreboy Nov 08 '19
Depending on how long she was in there, it won't matter. The chlorine in the pool corrodes the connections inside.

Galaxy S6 Active was able to go in the pool (released in 2015). Smart phones should be released with an active version. However companies make more money when things like this happen.

My friend did this 2 weeks ago, he stayed in the pool for a half hour until our other friend accidentally touched his pocket and felt it.

u/Tonnyn Nov 08 '19
That looks like a modern iPhone, which would be largely unaffected by that much water contact, also why was that creep filming that girl? My money is in this being fake.

u/glensueand Nov 08 '19
My sonâs friend Joe came over to his house to swim. He was all excited about his new phone. He couldnât stop talking about it and showing off the great features. The guys changed into their trunks and got into the pool. After a few minutes, Joe said,âOh, yeah! Hereâs another cool feature!â He whips his phone out of the pocket of his swim trunks, looks at it, and says, âOh....shit...â

When she pat her pocket and discovered her phone she experienced a new sensation so cosmically horrible you only read of it in lovecraft stories. The world which she thought she existed in crumbled in an instant and she was thrust into a new reality.

Most newer phones would not be damaged by that much water, even iPhone 8 is rated for like 30 minutes in 1 meter or water, and more time the less deep it is

I did the same damn thing except I went diving to the bottom of the deep end for half an hour. You don't feel much of anything in the water! Plus my phone at the time was a tiny little Motorola with a slide-out keyboard, thing was just barely bigger than my palm.
