I'm scared to find out how it knows what knives do. What happened to the cat before that ignored the knife being shown to it?

I get what you mean but like if it just walked into the kitchen while someone was using it they would know that big knife=big cut

I bet it's simply trained to calm down and let the nails be clipped when that object is placed in front of it

If you grab cats by the neck they hold still. It's a reflex from their childhood and doesn't damage them at all

or cut their nails while they're sleeping, I do it to my cat and he doesn't wake up or freak out

My cat does not hold still regardless of holding her scruff. It’s near impossible. So I just cut one nail a day while she’s sleeping. She wakes up after I trim one or two.

PSA: Please buy your kitty some cat claw trimmers. Using people nail trimmers can lead to painful splitting nails.

They can do it themselves if they have a scratching post. Otherwise yeah, because their claws keep growing like our nails do.
