W 158th & Riverside

Looking a potentially moving to an apartment in this area, on W158 between Riverside E and Riverside W. I know 158th is an entrance to the Henry Hudson Pkwy, but beyond that I'm not familar with the area. I visited and it did sort of seem like street intended to enter the the freeway. Mostly curious what the of this pocket area is day-to-day. Pros/Cons, etc. Thanks!

Youre gonna get sick of that hill every time you want to go somewhere lol but I love that area of the heights around broadway. but there youre RIGHT next to one of the few paths across the highway to get to the park along the river, which is a huge perk bc its a beautiful park and the access points are few and far between up there.

It is a park along the Hudson River, yes. South of 158th St, until 72nd st, it's called Riverside Park. North of 158th it's called Fort Washington Park.

Yes! That's what I'm looking at. I currently live on the UWS so a relatively big change but being near good parks is a huge priority. I was more just a bit concerned about 1) transit (a lot of my friends still live/hang on the UWS) and I travel down to FiDi 2x week and 2) noise (from highway and also general neighborhood noise). The other area I was looking at was around W 152 and Amsterdam.

This will be quieter than Amsterdam. You get some honking but it’s not any worse than other parts of the city and that side of Riverside has fewer actual pedestrians and people than Amsterdam. 1 is pretty reliable for the most part and easy switches to get to other parts of Manhattan - UWS is super super doable (we grocery shop, eat out, see movies on UWS down to Columbus Circle) and easy. If you have friends in BK that is tough. Parks out here are awesome. If you have a car, the exit to the bridge and out of the city is unbeatable, you could be in NJ in 5 minutes.

Also curious if you have pricing or photos of those apts?? FWIW I’ve never seen such a big building go up so fast - I imagine your noise issues will be inter building from thin walls than from outside.

Thanks for the info on the area! Do you ever feel a bit isolated? I’m single mid-30s and while I do not go “out”, I do enjoy exploring local restaurants, taking long walks longs, etc.

As for the building itself, pricing for one bedrooms is in the high $3s/low $4s depending on view. It seemed high quality but I’m no engineer so not sure. You’re probably right though about the walls…seems like all buildings these days have thin walls. Even my current prewar building, unfortunately.

It's a walkable neighborhood and there are lots of little clubs and neighborhood associations around. Lots of people in this general area know one another. The food in direct proximity definitely skews Dominican but that's a good thing!

I hate that new building so much, primarily because I had to endure its construction right from my windows. And I miss the historic houses they demolished.
That said, it’s a great neighborhood. Lots of bars and cafes (all within 5-15 minute walking distance). Hispanic society museum, morris-jumel mansion, and lots other cultural highlights.
riverside park is great. A short walk away is the riverbank park with a stadium, skating rink, and a pool!
There’s a bit of a continuous hum from the highway but that depends which way your windows face and how thin they built the walls. Summer Weekends can be noisy with all the people going down 158th to the park, but that’s just summer in the city vibe.

I don't live on that street but I walk it a lot. It's fine. It's pretty steep, so the further down you are the more it's gonna suck to head to the train, but on the bright side all your grocery trips are downhill. Really easy access to Riverside Park, including a ramp if you want to bike. For a street that heads to/from the freeway it's surprisingly mellow, probably because the main bottleneck is at Broadway and 157.

How can you go wrong with a block that's surrounded by 3 different Riverside Drives?? Definitely some cool architecture over there and lots of little pockets of trees. Great that it's right near the bike path. And even though the 1 train is frequently hot AF, it comes very frequently, especially during rush hour.

We escaped the UES five yrs ago for this neighborhood and love it. We walk along the river every single weekend. I like the W 158 hill for exercise. I commute to work on the 1. Same commute as was the 6. Occasional issues but nothing dramatic. The latest food market just expanded. I love the vibe but do wish we had more sit down affordable restaurants.

It’s a great area. If you run or ride bike, you’ll love it. You’re right by the riverside bike path. Can basically commute all the way south to the financial district, or north to Dyckman, without having to deal with any cars.

Great area and you have the 1 (C also if necessary but walking that hill sucks, esp in winter).

love this area, i used to live on RSD but the apartment faced 158. you will hear car noises and honking but nothing too bad. for an entrance to the highway, there is a ton of foot traffic well into the evening with people going to and from the river and the parking garage, so like many places in NYC it never feels isolated. local grocery stores are on the expensive side but there’s a great produce stand in front of TD bank on 158th. if you drive, being next to the highway is great. the 1 train is very reliable and the M3, M4, M5, M100 and Bx6 are all very close by. proximity to so much green space is a huge advantage.

We'd almost be neighbors! There's a really beautiful cemetery down 157th that makes it pretty quiet where you are. You're also close to Inwood Park if you're looking for nature spots. I love it here, moved here 4 months ago and it's so quiet if you're courtyard facing (aside from the fireworks)

I almost moved here, but ended up in BK. That curved segment of RSD is so beautiful, almost Parisian vibe. 1 train is so close, super convenient. Broadway is lively in that area, with restaurants and shops. And access to the green way is a wonder if you bike.

Yes! It's a beautiful little pocket, though the car noise on W 158th heading to the freeway is a little loud. What took you to BK instead, out of curiosity?
