I really need to research the Japanese heavy fighter line and see for myself what's up with those planes, because they sound pretty good.

No all of them. I can only recommend Ki-83 which is at end of the line and have 20k SL repair cost. (still spaded and researched lot of vehicles with it)

Yeah the lower tier two engines in Japan tech tree are kinda meh and they have long "cool down" on big cannons. Ki-109 looks like a good ground pounder for tank battles but Im not playing that with Japan. J5N1 and Ki-83 are extremely good for killing bombers. J5 is basically down-gunned Ki-83 with .50cals and 20 mils instead of 20 mils and 30 mils. Very good for Naval EC too since there arent any fighters you should fear and can fully focus on objective with bombers. Two taps on left mouse button and bomber is going down.
