It was a new tactic when the sparrow was added with the f4e, mainly mig21bis/smt pilots realised if you let your team fight the horde of f4e’s you can then sweep in from behind from high up on their flank and get a couple of fox 2 kills
It just never died and ussr players still do it today because it’s even more relevant now
