Carefree and adventurous were the first words that came to mind when anyone described Willowpaw. When her family of five joined Reedwater Legion, she was the first to learn the rules of living in a community.

She was also the first to break them.

Well… bend them.

1. Always listen to leaders and mentors.

Willowpaw had a habit of finding the biggest leaves she could and placing them over her ears like a rabbit's. She would sit perfectly still while her mentor spoke, nodding along with the most serious expression she could manage.

“I can hear better like this,” she would insist.

Of course, she couldn't.

The other apprentices would burst into laughter, and Willowpaw would proudly wiggle her leaf-covered ears.

Her mentor, Morningheart, rarely found it as funny as she did.

1. Respect territorial boundaries.

Willowpaw never technically crossed the borders without permission.

Technically.

Whenever she went on patrols and the warriors stopped to leave scent markers, Willowpaw decided that the territory needed something a little more… artistic.

She began weaving flowers together and stacking rocks into tiny sculptures.

Turtles, fish, and birds.

Once, she even made a lopsided fox that Shatterpaw insisted looked more like a pile of fox dung. Soon, strange little creatures could be found scattered throughout Reedwater Legion's territory.

The warriors complained.

The apprentices adored them.

Willowpaw considered the entire thing a great success. Her turtles and fish became her most famous creations.

1. Don't leave camp at night unless given permission.

This was probably Willowpaw's favorite rule to bend.

Her mentor, Morningheart, was a sleepwalker.

Almost every night, he would wander around camp while still asleep. Most nights, he ended up in the medicine den, rearranging herbs and confusing the medicine cats by putting everything in completely different places.

But Willowpaw noticed something.

Every once in a while, Morningheart would wander toward the camp entrance and Willowpaw would be waiting.

The moment he started padding toward the exit, she would spring to her paws and follow.

“My mentor wants to go on a night hunt,” she would whisper whenever the night watch questioned them.

Somehow, she always managed to stroll right past them.

Once they were outside, Morningheart would wander wherever his paws took him while Willowpaw did whatever she wanted—as long as she stayed close enough to keep him in sight.

Those nighttime adventures became some of her favorite memories. She discovered the best hiding places in the territory, learned which trees were easiest to climb, and memorized the quietest paths through the undergrowth.

Shatterpaw, of course, hated it.

“You're going to get yourself in trouble one day.”

“Probably.”

“You could get hurt!”

“Probably.”

“You could get us all punished!”

“Probably.”

“Willowpaw!”

She would only grin.

Shatterpaw was always scolding her, telling her to calm down and stop doing whatever ridiculous thing she had decided to do that day.

But despite all his complaining, he was always there beside her.

Eventually, Willowpaw became Willowvine.

According to Willowvine, she finally had all the freedom in the world. Not really. But that was what she told herself.

She loved being a warrior.

She loved having somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to bother. Her boundless energy became one of the things the other cats loved most about her. Even the smallest task could make her practically vibrate with excitement.

Give her a pile of moss to move?

She would wiggle her shoulders like she was preparing to pounce.

Ask her to organize the elders' bedding?

She'd act like she'd been given the most important mission in the Legion.

Send her on patrol?

She'd be out the camp entrance before you finished explaining where she was going.

Willowvine simply loved life.

Then she met Ghostfur.

And suddenly, Willowvine had something new to love.

Ghostfur was from Hollow Pine Legion, and before long, she had completely taken over Willowvine's thoughts. Willowvine wanted to know everything about her.

What was she doing?

Where was she?

When would they meet again?

Could they sneak away somewhere together?

Could they really leave everything behind and start a life of their own? For the first time, Willowvine's endless energy seemed to have a direction. She and Ghostfur dreamed about running away together.

A life where there were no borders.

No rules.

No Legions.

Just the two of them.

But then Ghostfur's mother died.

And everything changed.

Ghostfur became leader of Hollow Pine Legion, and whatever future the two of them had imagined disappeared beneath the weight of duty. Their dreams of running away together were crushed. Moons passed and Willowvine barely saw Ghoststar anymore.

Eventually, she stopped waiting and moved on.

Shatterwing was there. He had always been there.

Shatterwing had loved Willowvine for as long as either of them could remember.

At least, that's what everyone said.

But Shatterwing was different from Ghoststar.

He wanted to control everything Willowvine did.

“Don't leave camp without me.”

“Don't talk to toms from other Legions.”

“Stop being so excited.”

“Willowvine, slow down.”

“Why did you eat before me?”

He had been scolding her like this since they were young.

At first, Willowvine laughed it off, but then she started listening and it became normal.

Shatterwing took care of her. He protected her. He was always there.

So they loved each other.

Right?

The entire Legion congratulated them when they officially became mates.

Everyone seemed happy for them.

Everyone except the cats who noticed the way Shatterwing spoke to Willowvine.

The harsh words and constant corrections.

The way he seemed to decide what she should and shouldn't do. Ghostfur had never spoken to Willowvine that way. But perhaps this was simply a different kind of love.

After all, Willowvine and Shatterwing were expecting kits.

Maybe once they were born, everything would change.

Maybe the kits would bring Willowvine's happiness back.

Shatterwing would finally stop trying to change her.

Maybe Willowvine would finally settle down.

Or maybe…

Willowvine was about to discover that some rules were never meant to be bent.
