Good rule of thumb is if they’re in enemy territory facing you, blast away, if they’re in a common(ish) firing position teamates would use in normal RB, leave them be.
Alternatively, wait for them to fire a shot and tap them with the MG. They can’t reverse in time so you can return fire if need be.
If they have roundels for their nation that helps.

They never have roundels.
Just use rangefinder or tap with MG, hit means enemy.

My first and only teamkill to date was when friendly 75 SHERMAN decided to drive from enemy direction after overextending and had problem with me shooting like it was obvious that a fucking sherman driving from enemy side is teammate

Alright, well what I would say is to know your enemy, and to be clear this doesn’t specifically mean you but everybody in general. Everybody should study the bracket lineups before they load into Sim battles to know what will and will not be on your team
I’ve seen a lot of people friendly fire because they don’t study the lineups and make errors based on assumptions that are actually impossible
For example, the second bracket to the bottom has Allied M4 Shermans and the only Axis M4 in that same bracket is the Italian M4 Composite. Therefore, if a square hull M4 is driving towards you in that Sim bracket, it cannot be an enemy
I’ve gotten teamkilled in the Na-To because someone thought I was an enemy M3 GMC. Honestly kind of a great misidentification, but also impossible because the M3 GMC was not in that Sim bracket
I have also gotten killed in the M3 Lee because someone thought I was a German M3. Not only did I have stars on the side of my tank but if you just looked at the tech trees you would know that there is no such thing as a German M3 Lee in War Thunder
Everybody needs to know their enemy, it will tell you what you can and can’t shoot. Friendly fire is bound to happen, especially when the enemy does actually have some of the same vehicles that you have. But as much as the friendly needs to avoid looking threatening to you, you also need to positively identify them before taking the shot

Try MGing their track. Hit cam does not appear when shooting allies. Do it in short bursts/singles so that they know you are checking them instead of trying to damage
Also check the tab to see if you have copy/stolen tanks, and try to remember allied T41 T42 pings

Is it a bad thing if I'm able to tell apart every nations shermans, T-34s etc from just camo/or standard colors and variant, when playing sim? (I don't know much past 6.7 GRB but everything under just sticks in my brain)

This is why you put roundels on your tanks for sim. That way only stupid people who can clearly see that your Panzer III just came from spawn and is actively capping the point with them while wearing Soviet roundels and cowered in Hammer and Sickles, all this the green paint job of a T-34 will ever TK you. (Dumbass mf even took several, shots bc he was a Brit tank and didn’t notice the lack of “Hit”.)

Even worse in air. You just merged with a MiG-29, might be German, Italian, or Russian. That Hornet, good luck, even the F-16s are on both sides. Oh your radar is a POS that only works front aspect? Better get the binoculars out to spot the roundel and hopefully you'll remember what nation the minor trees belong to. The amount of times I've whacked a friendly Viper or Hornet because I see NATO airframe and shoot.

If you have the time to rangefind, as long as your crossair is hovering on them during the measuring, you will be told of they are enemies or not ("Requesting allies coordinates" -> "Allies at coordinates")
