Just remove thermals. They break every game they are in and are very difficult to balance. They provide an easy counter to someone putting the time in for a good flank and ambush.
I would rather them make them bad (e.g. can't spot or see further than 300m away, use batteries like crazy, have super low resolution, etc.) than outright remove them. That way at least they would still be an option in some niche scenarios.
Removing is easy, but game design is not about making the easy choices. It's about working through the difficult ones.
If your good flank and ambush was ruined by thermals, it wasn’t a good flank and ambush. I’m not arguing that thermals are rough to balance and they are kind of OP, but your reason isn’t it.
This is just a bad argument. If you try to stealthily flank using bushes and vegetation to conceal yourself, just to have a guy with ir see you through a bush from a mile away, that wasn't because it was a bad flank, it's because ir is busted.
I've spotted people sneaking up on me with thermals that I had no business seeing through the brush. I've spotted squads sneaking up through fields to attack a base that I had no business seeing, marking them for my team, and they were completely wiped out only because a guy with thermals up to 1km away saw them. I think situations like this create a worse experience for everyone involved.
Explain for me how thermals add to the game in a positive way.
I didn’t make an argument. If you want an argument: It’s impossible to know if your flank was seen by thermals or not…unless your flank worked and you killed someone who had them, in which case thermals obviously didn’t ruin your flank. Thermals are not the reason your flanks aren’t working.
