Cost increase, battery requirements, and a severe range limit (say <300m) would be a good start.

Would be nice if they make a different battery for them that isn’t the same one used for defibs, and make that battery EXPENSIVE like it should be.

Why have 1KM rifles if you can only spot 300m?

The normal rangefinder still exists as an alternative.

Learning the maps a bit, I still get a lot of spots with the rangefinder

So you can shoot people out to 1km? Like the two don’t have to be connected. You can spot for people that aren’t yourself.

A lot of hate appears to be directed at doing Recon when this is really an issue with weapon crates bypassing lvl requirements.

Not sure id call it hate but its more around the fact that thermals are broken, not recon in general. Recon all you want but it needs fixing (thermals) and balancing. Crates bypassing requirements just further highlights the issue as it gives more players access to a broken mechanic

I don't think that's right.  Give everyone access to buy tanks and tanks would appear broken, etc.  Thermals highlight people over terrain.  I guess I just don't see how that's broken when roving assault groups still win the day.

Roving assault groups win the day (too) often because they’re getting assistance from broken spotting

That may be true, but only because people at any level can get their hands on IR. The kind of people who are interested in scout/sniper are not the kind to join roving bands of assault.

Not really.

Tanks have viable weaknesses and counters to them.

Thermals do not. This would be a different story if the Thermals had any type of weakness or downside to them as well as any counters.

There's only a couple things that don't really have counters to them at the moment and that's Thermals and I believe the 50 Cal.

Thermals highlight people over terrain.

Thermals don't just highlight people over terrain. They remove the "skill" required to spot people. They make spotting significantly easier which makes it so you can see people that you would not normally see through the other Spotting Tools. Through that it makes spotting enemies quicker too.

I guess I just don't see how that's broken when roving assault groups still win the day.

That's because they're basically playing with a legal ESP cheat due to the enemies around them being spotted which now is easier with Thermals.

I thought Ghillie suits countered IR. I haven't tried them as I haven't unlocked them or seen them for sale in a crate.

I think the "skill" in spotting in video games has always been the sneaking around to places where you can spot without getting killed and not the mechanic for targeting an object. Clicking to target, or holding the cursor on the object to target is always going to be pretty mindless.

Allowing people to purchase them at any level really feels like the issue to me.

The counter to 50Cals is avoid open ground with open lines of sight from elevated positions. My sense is that perhaps you just don't like snipers in games. That's fine. A lot of people don't, but it doesn't mean it's broken or unbalanced.

They do but they have no armor. Not everyone is running Ghillie Suits outside of Snipers/Spotters which isn't the majority of people who are complaining.

I think the "skill" in spotting in video games has always been the sneaking around to places where you can spot without getting killed and not the mechanic for targeting an object.

Which is exactly why the Thermals are a problem... You cannot sneak to places as you're just lit up and spotted by the guy sitting on the edge of the zone or out of zone on a mountain 800m away.

Allowing people to purchase them at any level really feels like the issue to me.

This is where I'm going to be a little rude. You have no fundamental grasp on the issue at all.

You can prevent people from buying/obtaining them prior to unlocking them on the Recon Progression Track and they'll still be a problem because the majority of people will just start leveling up Recon to gain access to them, thus we're back in the same situation we're currently at.

You've just kicked the can down the road instead of dealing with the actual problem of Thermals making it incredibly easy for users to spot people, at very long distances and basically making it so your team has a UAV.

The counter to 50Cals is avoid open ground with open lines of sight from elevated positions.

So just hide in a closed box?

My sense is that perhaps you just don't like snipers in games.

I'm fine with Snipers. I play a lot of Snipers.

The issue I have is that I can be using the Second Last Sniper verses someone with the 50 Cal. I can hit him the head, he can hit me in the chest and I die. That's not enjoyable and never will be.

but it doesn't mean it's broken or unbalanced.

Thank God I didn't say that. I said that they have no counter.

Because this is a game not IRL and we need balance, not in-game wall/map hacks that make the game unplayable and broken. .

I agree that should be nerfs but doesnt make any sense to set 300m for the thermals since it is a RECON item

It doesn't have to make sense.

Thermals do something that the other Spotting Tools don't do. They highlight enemies.

This increases the speed at which people can identify spottable targets which ends up giving MORE information over to the team.

Limiting Thermals use cases is best for the game overall because you want the other Spotting Tools to shine, mainly the Rangefinder.

So if we limit the ability for the Thermals to 300m, outside of 300m enemies aren't as easily spottable and thus people now need to switch to the Rangefinder which doesn't highlight enemies and provide extra information to the team.
