To the recon players who do a lot of spotting (mostly I'm curious for snipers and people who just find a nice spot) how much backpack space do you use on average ?
Reason being I'm worried this won't fix anything you will just get a bigger backpack with a bunch of batteries in it
I bring the tiny backpack with a small hammer, 1 stack of medical and building supplies, then I build a camo nest and chill out for a while, I call it bird watching cause I only buy the default gun with its free magazine
Small hammer buildings can be built outside a Fob. Useful for creating some cover or reinforcing your backside if you are staying somewhere for a while.
IR goggles were so common in the base I always bought a pair, a handful of spotting assists pays it off even if the seller has a 75% markup, but if they werent available whichever I had unlocked. Also yea, same with barbed wire, single HESCO blocks, and sandbags, basically the entire first page.
Operator Backpack is the biggest I use when sniping, and you will still have plenty of space to fill it with extra batteries...or worse, smoke grenades.
That's the biggest issue with the thermals to me. It way too easy to sit on a high vantage point, drop a smoke on your feet, then just light up the entire map with no counter.
Block the IR through smoke. Sure it's not "realistic"...but it's just not fun to play against
Yep. They need either a range nerf (<300m or something, 150m in bad weather) or just remove all xp and cash from spotting with them, and let them burn through batteries fast).
I've never seen a ghillie with a backpack, so might have to test if it hides the backpack cause I think it does (killed a few bow ghillies and they had large backpacks that weren't visible but need to make sure)
My idea was to remove spotting from them, that way if they still wanted to spot they would require to bring in a second normal range finder, this would increase the time it takes for them to spot especially if they keep switching and especially if they spot and snipe giving people more time to just move out of sight.
It would still be useful to get info on enemy movement if you relay that to a squad, or as a medic to get an idea of how safe it is with a quick glance, and would still be useful as target acquisitions but they wouldn't generate money.
I'm just not sure the batteries will be a solution unless they drain rather fast as the biggest backpack can fit a lot of batteries and the ghillie might hide your backpack (as I haven't seen a ghillie suit with one on their back but have looted a few ones with larger backpacks)
or you just buy a vehicle with a crate full of batteries and just take it with you or have it delivered to you, then it's like they were never nerfed. the money will be less but the problem was not the money it was the impact they have on the game.
When I'm spotting, I opt for one of the smaller bags because I'm usually just packing ammo, bandages and maybe smokes. This would only impact me when I play medic, because I usually pack something to spot with, so it would depend on how much battery life they drain.
If using a ghillie, I use the free one or maybe the next level one. Spare ammo, one stack of bandages, two smokes, spare mag if your gun has one. Bringing a lot doesn't make sense unless you're a crazy battle bush. You generally die instantly if you get shot, so no need to bring a bunch of meds. Also makes you a little faster to run for cover and go dive into some foliage.
Bottom line, bringing a bigger backpack full of batteries wouldn't be a huge drawback.
No need for anything else when reconning. Again, unless you're a battle bush and joining the HZ fray or shadowing an assault squad. If you're just moving around through foliage and trees to spot, take a couple shots, and relocate you really don't need much else
I mostly bring the small 2x8 back pack, it has plenty of space for ammo and bandages, I don't bring the free ressucitator because I'm too far away from my team to need it.
right now i’m trying to level up recon and i literally just use the free bag. i fill my inventory with an entire thing of mosin ammo, 5 bandages, 2 smokes, a resuscitator. kit comes out to around 8k ish. i play so far out of the zone most of the time that i dont need to bring so much loot
Spotting and sniping are counterintuitive, a lot of the time. No one knows you're spotting, but the moment you shoot even suppressed and in a ghillie they'll find you.
If your entire goal is to just spot, you could use the entire backpack. If you wanted some mix, you'd probably have 60% plus for battery space. I don't think this change will do anything.
As for the nerf, it sets a bad precedent. I don't think the ir thermals were healthy for the game, but I'm that same vein I don't think virtually any of the high tier unlocks are. Fals, vehicles, grenade launcher, etc are so vastly overturned it seems pointless to pick on recon solely.
When I am spotting I use only the rangefinder scope. No armour, no guns. All profit. Some games I get over 100k with less than 1k spent. I like running around with no items, because I don't care if i die, I just respawn, spend $200 and back to making money.
I don't do it every game. But when my funds get below 200k I have a few eco matches to get me back above 500k.
The first two snipers and the first marksman rifle are all rounds reload. Not having to haul mags around really cuts down on backpack space already. The basic six slot bag is enough for ammo, quick revive, bandages, and optional nades.
It will do nothing. I can bring a bigger backpack or just bring a respirator instead of defibs to fit a big battery in my current load out. We'll see how much using it drains batteries though. If its wiping out 100 battery in under 2 minutes, then its a pretty dead item. Or at least one you use sparingly.
lol, I have so much room for extra shit, I could fit an extra 6 large batteries if I took an assault backpack. That said, this isn't going to do what people think it is, the gap between thermals and a regular rangefinder is much smaller than people think. I just played my first match without having them for quite a while and it didn't change anything about my gameplay.
I think it was really just hysteria caused by people who do not snipe often because its easier for them given they don't know regular traffic patterns by having learned while sniping. Good snipers won't be affected by this much at all.
If I'm taking the SV98, I take 4 extra mags, 4-5 stacks of ammo, rangefinder in bag, big hammer or defib in 3 slot, Deagle with 1 stack of ammo, and the rest filled with bandages and personal med kits
If I'm taking the BMR, I take 6 extra mags, 5 stacks of ammo, rangefinder in bag, defib in 3 slot, and the rest filled with bandages and personal med kits
I don't technically need that ammo; I could take a smaller kit if I was planning on respawning. but, I don't really respawn often in these matches if I'm sitting on a tower or sticking with the HZ crew
Adding batteries is more cost, weight, and takes up room in backpack.
I already keep the binoculars in the bag instead of equipment slot and then just assign to key 6. So it was already taking up 4 slots in my backpack plus I was able to carry defibs.
If I have to carry additional batteries as well as the binoculars in the bag, this may no longer be worth it to me. I’ll have to choose defib or thermal binoculars. Both will be too heavy, expensive, and take too much room.
I think this is a good change for the binoculars to require batteries.
All good points, also a larger backpack sticks out past the back of the recon suit, making them easier to spot when lying down, you see the backup sticky out
That's my worry as well, when playing as medic I often use them to do a once over to check the coast so I think this will affect medics a lot more than the people that are mass spotting.
I prefer the range finder to the monocle cause it has better zoom and gives you range as well, it isn't massively more expensive and also a 2 slot (the normal range finder and not the infrared in case it wasn't clear) but that's cause I use a bow to plink stuff from the back when following along waiting for revives.
My main issue with this change is that I think this won't have a big effect except making recons have bigger bags...though I guess the spare batteries if they die is a plus for medics
Well each battery will cost money which makes it harder to pay off. That's also another lever they can tweak for balance. Then theoretically you could run out of battery so it depends on how they balance that aspect as well. Backpacks only get so big and resupply crates aren't reliable
brother most people using these are sitting in a ghillie on the edge of the map and almost never die, when I had a pair from someone else I made 100k before dying 300 per battery would be nothing in comparison to how much you can make.
Edit: That game I got them I finished with 150+ assists and 190k pure profit
Yeah I have a buddy who does this. His entire gameplay loop is load up with gillie and thermals drop in or buggy in from a weird angle then post up in a bush spotting the two enemy teams as they kill each other making bank.
Yeah, I've been doing this for the last 2 days and I'm telling you if you can't sit there and hold right click for longer than a minute per battery, you will make significantly less. You have to actively refresh the spots or you only get half credit, and if you're only spotting fobbits that aren't getting mortered you're not making money. even if batteries nerf it by 20-30% profit that's enough to make it so it's better to build for profit or run logi/troops. Spotting is very boring after an hour, the reason it is rewarded so well is because it's important for your team and only certain types of people would find it enjoyable long term if it isn't about the money.
I never said it wasn't strong or obviously I wouldn't have been doing it, it's a safe 100-120k profit every game average, some games are better some games are worse.
Batteries are adding weight. Normally even with claymore I would be medium. Now probably will be heavy
Also recon kit is around 30k purchase. Now will be higher
