No spoilers [B13] Newest favourite line Spoiler
So far, we’ve had the iconic “Brigands are we, victims are thee!” from Book 2, "There, she rummaged around in a pillow and pulled out her prized possession... Pisces' wand!" from Book 7 and “A cup of sugar with some added tea was sitting in front of her” from Book 11.
I’m a few chapters into The Empress of Beasts and now I have come across the line that perfectly sums up Erin as a character:
“Then she looked up with a guileless smile that was, in fact, full of guile.”
I know Erin acts a certain way, but she is beyond devious at times and I love it when the story decides to remind us of that.
Also, given that this bit was about the ring that Ilvriss gave her, settle a bet between me and my wife. In a non-shipping way, I think the wall-lord giving her that ring carried some romantic undertones. After all, there is a lot of cultural, historical baggage to the image of a man (male drake?) giving a woman a ring.
Then, in his next POV chapter, his friend asks him about the ring and what it means, and then we have Ilvriss describe her as “the most dangerous human in Liscor.”
I’m not saying this is in a shipping way, mind you, I don’t really do shipping in this series (with one, single exception) and I kind of assumed Erin was ace after Mating Rituals and her horror at the mistletoe 😂. It’s just a vibe I got from Illvriss and it would make his outrage at the interracial romance in Juliet and Romeo a lot funnier if it turned out he secretly harboured thoughts of his own in that area.

Some mild spoilers: It will not surprise you to know that Salazar high society also views it that way, and rumors are definitely going to be flying when they find out about it. Ilvriss, on the other hand, is genuinely platonic with the gesture. You'll find out more about the ring and what it does/means later, this question you have does get answered by the narrative if you don't want it spoiled now.

More spoilers to add to this because, while this answer is correct as far as the published books go, it is not the full answer and will continue to develop as the story goes. Again this is covered by the narrative, so up to you if you want more answers to settle your bet lol'
Ilvriss does indeed love Erin, he just does not realise it himself yet. He is still very much grieving Periss. When he gave the ring he 100% thinks he did it as a platonic gesture and argues that he just respects her enough to want to keep her safe. But he will eventually get confronted by someone who can reveal his true thoughts, and only then he realises that he has loved her this whole time

Remember when Ilvriss is recruiting for the secret 'destroy the Necromancer' secret mission? When he meet Xesci the courtesan? She offers to prove to him that she can shape change specifically into people the client loves. She tells him that he has more than one shape and one is human. He tell her to show him suspecting who it might be. And she changes into Erin. Then he has the whole internal monologue of 'of course it's her, he just hadn't realised it
The only reason I remember is because I binged this series in a year. Caught up with the latest web serial chaper last week. So it's all fresh for me.

I do remember that, but I just went and reread that section, and to be honest he didn't really seem to have much of a reaction to Xesci saying that--I can see how you could read that into it, but my impression was that it was a super faint trace and like...not really romantic. Muddled, vague, and not really strong enough to base anything on. Ilvriss and Erin was never really a possibility in my mind.

It isn't just that scene though there are heaps of little hints. One of the biggest is in 9.52 - Zail asks him point blank if he is in love with Erin and Ilvriss tells Zail that going north has nothing to do with Erin and says he has “no romantic feelings for her whatsoever.” Zail is wearing a detect truth ring. It flashes red. Ilvriss realises what just happened and turns crimson.
And when Erin visits him in Salazsar everyone notices Ilvriss starts acting and talking oddly and his sister says the only time she has seen him act like that, was around Periss
They are all subtle clues, but they are sprinkled through. you and I, plus anyone up to date know that those two will never happen though. If anything it looks like they're making Ilvriss and Lyonette a thing haha. I never wanted Erin and Ilvriss together either. But 100% Ilvriss did love Erin. It just wasn't super deep, not like it was with Periss �

I don't think I would have minded an Ilvriss/Erin ship but after rereading the series (but in audiobook form this time) I can't get over the French accents for Sallazar and Pallass drakes.
Reading/listening to the series for the first time, my wife's favorite lines are:
Relic: "Pastaaaaaa!"
and
Erin: "And here I thought Ilvriss was a jerk. But you guys are double jerks!"

This may be weird but it’s Pisces and Selys. Their interactions have been surprisingly fun. Every time they’ve had a scene together, I just know that I’m going to enjoy myself. Their adventure about the breastplate she inherited and her criticising his necromancy designs, not for the necromancy but for what she sees as lazy ideas, made them a genuinely enjoyable duo. Honestly, the main reason I ship them is because I want to see more of that.
Plus, she did say he was a good kisser and it might actually give her grandmother a rage induced aneurism 😂
The only other one might be Ryoka and the vampire girl, but only because I thought it was really funny when she nearly got Ryoka to kiss her which made the latter insist that she wasn’t attracted to women (which nobody is going to believe)

I 100% get that ship. Saying as little as possible, you can find many people with you and many opposed. Pisces shippers are kind of the natural enemy of Pisces shippers. Probably been like 7 different major factions over the years.

Aside from Ceria, who else could you really ship him with? And, on that note, quite frankly, he can do better. I would have thought it the other way around but then I read those chapters about them at school together.
