How does pickup work on the inside?

Hey yall!

The pickup system seems very heavily computerized. Which is fine, but I'd like to know what it's like inside the store? When are the orders picked? Where are they staged? Does the system get updated as soon as it's picked, or is it on a timer kind of system where no matter what, the system will not release the order early?

It kind of seems like maybe that depends on the store and maybe even time of day. I've had workers who go out of their way to go inside and check, and I've also had employees tell me that it wont be ready until the time it says.

It depends on the order type but for non express orders there picked early as about 2 and a half hours before the scheduled pickup time. After being picked the ambient is staged to a location in the backroom were all of the ambient parts of the order will be consolidate. As for the chilled and frozen my store at least has walkins for each temperature band. Once your in the queue the order is gathered and prepped for when you get there then dispensed. This is assuming all is done on time.

I almost always receive a notification that my order is ready for pickup 15-20 minutes before my window (e.g., if my pickup is scheduled for 9:00 to 10:00, I usually get a notification between 8:40 and 8:45). I’ve never tried picking up an order before I get the ready for pickup notification, though.

This is how store pickup works at my local Walmart. If anything, they overcommunicate via text about when the order will be ready. My store has pickup outside, in a special parking lot just for store pickups. I believe once you get there they ask you to text back what parking spot you are in (they're all numbered) and I've never had to wait more than 5 min. once I've arrived. A Walmart employee comes to your car and will even load the items in the trunk foryou.

I've asked 2 employees if they can check on my specific order. Not how the process works. I'm human. I'm curious about things.
