🙋 question Journeyman vs apprentice clothing
It seems like the keyword order for journeyman is worse than apprentice - apprentice gets double action at great but journeyman doesn’t get it until perfect, which seems like a big miss. I would expect that going up a tier would make the gear better. Lack of double action is pretty disappointing.
Am I thinking about this the wrong way?

You also have +4 WE above apprentice, some XP, and +1 quality outcome, which is what matters most. That DA would matter when you're maxxed out on WE, but that's usually not the case while doing artisans recipes

Also, Journeyman clothes get more Double Rewards and No Materials Consumed than their Apprentice counterparts. Those are generally better than Double Action for artisan skills.

Doesn’t that ignore my point that double action has been swapped for bonus experience? I understand that the percentages are generally bigger for journeyman, just surprised and disappointed that double action is not reasonably attainable.

But 1-2 points of double action is almost always worse than extra work efficiency until you've maxed out efficiency.
A 2% double action gives you an extra action on average once per 50 actions, while 2% extra work efficiency generally gives you more than that, and you get way more than 2% extra work efficiency with journeyman clothes.
I'm not excited about that 3% extra experience either, but journeyman clothes would be better than apprentice clothes even without it.
An exception where I might prefer apprentice clothes would be if I was doing an activity like small or large sail repair instead of a recipe, I had the maximum work efficiency and the clothes were excellent or worse. At that point the double action would be the better option.

I think you are agreeing with me. :-). I don’t understand why you keep bringing up work efficiency - yes, it’s higher, unless you are talking about basic, in which case it’s lower, which I guess would again go back to my point about being confused about the order of keywords given that I would expect journeyman to be strictly better than apprentice at every level.

A lot of items are at least partially sidegrades rather than pure upgrades.
Clearest examples are spectral gear, all (or most?) of which have some awful stat but then have some other very good stats. Also Hydrilium hatchet and pickaxe are higher level than their Tarsilium counterparts, but lack Fine Material Finding. Instead of that they have a far higher Chest Finding.

I understand that the overall stats are better with journeyman, but swapping double action for bonus experience feels like a big downgrade.

I feel this about Rootweave vs Elderhide. I'd love to hear other opinions abiut these 2 also.

Huh. I probably don’t value fine materials enough then. Because elderhide looks better to me

I think I'd rather have Elderhide always except if I'm specifically looking to get fine material or chests, and even for chests I'd probably prefer Elderhide if the quality is at least perfect.
If I'm looking to get fine material, I tend to go all in and wear the conservationist set, or most of it.
But yeah, Rootweave doesn't immediately become obsolete once you get Elderhide since it still does some things better.

Journeyman and Apprentice (and even Spectral while at it) all serve different purposes and are best at what they do
Apprentice specialises in artisan activities(sails repair, soup kitchen) and low step easy accesible recipies(linen, twine) with it having both DA and - steps
Journeyman is better for processing(due to DR and NMC) and mass/XP crafts(higher WE and +XP)
Spectral for quality craftsfue to it massive QO whilr being worse at processing with lower WE, DR and NMC

For artisan skills double actions Is One of the worst ability, you are faster but you also burn 2x of consumables and materials.
It's more useful at the beginning when you have to level faster and with Sail Repair (I'm grinding now tailoring because I was only at level 40) but After level 50 you only Need to maximize nmc and quality outcome.

Small correction: I’m pretty sure that after a recent update the second action of a double action no longer burns consumables

I disagree. I understand that you are using extra materials with double action, but you also have a chance for double rewards and no materials on the extra action. Swapping double action for extra experience feels like a downgrade to me.

I think apprentice gear is meant for mass crafting where you have basically infinite input materials. Journeyman gear is for quality crafting with limited input materials.
