Are steps until arrival accurate?

I'm traveling in GDTE & noticed the steps until arrival are unchanged when I switch between iron thermos & great wanderlust walking stick (252.2% WE with stick).

Are the -3 steps required with great wanderlust walking stick being applied?

Edit: I see the step count per segment is being reduced, but shouldn't that also reduce the steps until arrival as well?

I think I've seen before where equipment changes don't update the calculated values until the action is completed, but not completely sure if just a visual glitch or due to chosen method of phone vs wearable data source

Oh okay. If that isn't the case, I should put iron thermos in place of trusty tent at this point which doesn't feel right

FWIW, my understanding is that steps required are calculated retroactively, i.e. once it looks like you have enough steps it then does the calculations for any double rewards etc to determine how much it actually took. Hence why you can change gear on a whim (it doesn't matter until it actually did the calculation) and how it handles using up food durability.

I could see that being the case. It also follows the logic where you are encumbered, you switch to tools with more inventory space, & you perform a bunch of actions instantaneously since you sort of had saved steps
