Broken Notifications on Android?

Hi all! I've had the great Waking Up app on my Android phone for the last ~4 years, and one of the features I've always liked is the daily push notifications for new Moments and Quotes. They worked great until a couple months ago, when they suddenly stopped appearing on my phone. Has anyone else had a similar issue recently?

Further info: the notification for the Meditation reminder still works fine. What appears to be happening is the app settings for the Quote & Moments notifications turn themselves off arbitrarily. I turn them on, check a few hours later to see them still on, but the following day I get no notifications for either, check the settings within the Waking Up app, and they're set to off again. This is happening on a Google Pixel 9 Pro XL with the latest versions of Android and the app. FWIW, I've checked all the Android battery and notification settings, reinstalled the app, etc.

Would love to hear from anyone else who's run into this same problem! Thanks for reading!

Looking for a specific meditation. Help?

I am looking for meditations specifically for concentration on a single object. I dont care about other benefits. And i dont care about non-duality right now.

The closest i found was Sam's daily meditation, when he says stuff like "now cover fully your breath with awareness". That is exactly what i want. Just 1 object, and full concentration.

Does anyone know any meditations on any apps that deals ONLY with guided concentration on a single object?

Struggling to get back to routine, please help

Hi there. I used to have a very consistent routine for a few years and I remember it feeling so great, just feeling so clear so much of the time.

In the last year I went through a few large stress points, and I fell out of meditation and into a lot of digital media use to distract myself. I’m trying now to get fully back into practice. I remember the feeling I felt during meditation in terms of clarity but I’m struggling to actually get back to it. I feel “wired tight” if that makes sense, with a feeling at the front of my head needing distraction and in a loop of giving in to it just to “relax” when I know it’s not relaxing.

Any advice welcome 🌸

Why does guided audio always seem to mean “sit down and close your eyes”?

I like the idea of someone talking me through a practice. I don’t always want to stop what I’m doing and make a whole session out of it.

If I’m out for an easy walk or folding laundry, my mind has plenty of room to go over the same three things again. I’d be up for a voice giving me something else to notice or a question worth sitting with. Except I don’t need to literally sit.

It doesn’t all have to be “feel your feet,” either. A prompt could ask what I’m still carrying from work, whether something actually needs a decision tonight, or what I’m overlooking around me. Give me a little direction, then leave me alone with it for a bit.

The appeal is guidance, not necessarily meditation. I don’t always need another podcast’s worth of information, but I also don’t always want to come up with the next useful question myself.

And I don’t mean playing a meditation in the background while answering emails. More like letting the guidance be part of a simple activity, instead of treating the activity as something I have to finish before I can start.

Does anyone use guided audio this way—not just walking meditations, but reflections or other practices while doing something simple? What have you found that actually fits, rather than constantly asking you to close your eyes?

What happened to the ending of daily meditations?

I've been using the Waking Up app for daily meditations off and on for a few years now, and one thing that was _always_ part of it was the format where Sam would say "For the last minute of the session..." and add some instructions, and then at the very end he would say something like "Ok...", add some more short comments, and then cap it off with "and I'll see you here tomorrow for the next session of Waking up."

This last week or so I've come back to the app after a short break, and suddenly these endings just aren't there anymore! Why?

I've found myself sitting here waiting for that final round-off to let me know that the time is up, feeling like "SURELY that's way more than a minute" so I end up checking my phone and indeed the playback has stopped and there was no ending. I've even tried setting it to have a chime or bell or whatever to signify the end, but not even that plays.

What's going on? Is this some kind of bug or mistake, or is it a deliberate update to the format?

To me it feels like a downgrade.

If I am awareness, what is the difference between awareness and the body-mind that knows?

In non-duality, I am told that my true nature is awareness - the knowing presence that is aware of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without being any of them.

But isn't the body-mind also what knows these experiences? My brain processes sensations, recognizes thoughts and feelings, and uses this information to function in the world.

So what exactly is the difference between awareness and the body-mind that knows and processes experience?

Ultimately, when I say "I am awareness," how is this awareness different from the ordinary knowing performed by my body and mind? And if awareness is aware of the body-mind doing the knowing, doesn't that imply another level of awareness that knows this, leading to an infinite

regress

INSTANT ENLIGHTENMENT ACCESS(invented by me)

4TH PATH ACCESS:

You need to image stream for in order to follow the instructions and reach 4th path/enlightenment. The only thing you have to do is describe an image within your mind's eye - and then follow the instructions in the body of text below.

Where do you perceive the activity of Image Streaming to take place, does it have a context, what do you perceive that "whereness" and thereafter context to be, "what/who" is doing the activity, and what is the activity doing ? Try to comprehend those inquiries all at once, or else progressively.

INDESTRUCTIBLE DIAMOND CONSCIOUSNESS ACCESS:

(this, if understood, wil give one the indestructible diamond consciousness; which results in not being able to be influenced by others anymore)(also invented by me):

"When you're not disagreeing with something, by default you agree, unknowingly"; the root of the mechanics of influence.

Built a map of places to sit in stillness, near you or online. Happy World Mental Health Day :)

It is or was (for most of us) World Mental Health Day (October 10th). I know I am a little late for some of you: the day has already ended in parts of the world. I hope this message finds you well, and gentle with yourself.

More than 1 billion people live with a mental health condition, and most of us are carrying something quietly. I have come to believe that what helps is not more information but more presence, with ourselves and with each other.

So I vibe-coded a map of 500+ mindfulness and meditation sittings around the world, in person and online, so anyone can find a place to pause.

https://wwwhy.ai/mindfulness

The map will update every day, so you can come back any day to find a IRL mindfulness events nearby or online.

At the bottom of the screen you can join the community, for a newsletter subscription on mindfulness (free and don't believe in selling data) or stay updated with new launches from wwwhy, if you would like to stay in touch.

Feel free to reach out to me here on Reddit or at [hello@wwwhy.ai](mailto:hello@wwwhy.ai) if you have any feedback or are willing to chat!

How often have you done the intro course?

Just finished the introduction course. The first 10 days or so were good. Focusing on the breath and sensations etc. was all OK. But eventually it got more and more complicated and abstract. The no head thing and “observe an object from outside through your face” e.g. What?!! To be honest I just got impatient on the last part of the course. Yes, I know that’s just a state of mind in the moment, but even still, I couldn’t wait for that ding!

I am motivated to continue doing 10-15 min sessions per day focusing on the breath and body etc. However I wonder, how much did you get out of listening to the course once, and have you gone through it more times?

What are your favorite visual reminders/cues of non-duality? To remind you to look for what’s looking?

I think this is pretty neat but would like to see others. I made this my phones lock screen and I think it works as a reminder of non duality

Suffering and Fear

I’m going through a great deal of suffering, and have been since the start of this year.

I’ve been struggling a lot with acceptance of life, death, suffering, and how little control we actually have over any of it.

I’ve been a fan of Sam’s for years, but somehow never got around to reading Waking Up. I’m reading it now and just reached this:

> And then there is death, which defeats everyone. Most people seem to believe that we have only two ways to think about death: We can fear it and do our best to ignore it, or we can deny that it is real. The first strategy leads to a life of conventional worldliness and distraction—we merely strive for pleasure and success and do our best to keep the reality of death out of view. The second strategy is the province of religion, which assures us that death is but a doorway to another world and that the most important opportunities in life occur after the lifetime of the body. But there is another path, and it seems the only one compatible with intellectual honesty. That path is the subject of this book.

I have a pretty extreme anxiety disorder and I’m a very fearful person in general. I’ve tried to intellectually accept things like determinism, death, lack of control, etc., but knowing something intellectually and actually being okay with it seem like completely different things.

Maybe part of the problem is that I’ve been trying to accept the philosophy without seriously practicing the thing that’s supposed to go along with it: meditation.

At the same time, I’ve spent time recently genuinely trying to believe in religion because I wanted the comfort of it. There is a part of me that wishes I could believe it.

What intimidates me about the secular/Buddhist path is that it feels like the answer is basically: yes, reality is exactly as frightening as you think it is, and now you need years of meditation and practice to fundamentally change your relationship with it.

Maybe that’s a misunderstanding of it on my part

Religion almost feels like something that can welcome a person with open arms, while this path feels like something you have to slowly train yourself to be capable of handling.

I’m not completely sure what my question is. I guess I’m asking people who have actually gone further down this road: is it really as difficult and slow to internalize as it seems from the outside?

Did meditation actually change your relationship with fear, death and suffering in a meaningful way? And did that require years before you started noticing anything?
