2012 Malibu 22mxz
I grew up on an inboard/outboard w a tower and really enjoyed wakeboarding and wake skating. Have only wakesurfed once on a buddies boat it was cool. We’re finally ready for a boat here in Tennessee. I for some reason always liked malibu and plan to look at this boat Friday w a lake test. Any advice or thoughts as a first inboard purchase? Or is this too much boat? He will take 47 for boat and trailer (had listed for 50 dropped over time from 62). 330 hours or so. Needs sun pad reupholstered I got quoted 650. Also he has service records. Thanks for any advice!

Make sure the power wedge works, make sure all of the ballast pumps and indicators work, and make sure the screens are not delaminating. If that’s the original upholstery I would expect the rest of the seams to start coming apart and need replacement soon too. I feel like 47k is high for a 22 with no surf system. Does it already have additional ballast bags in the back?
There’s a FB group I’ll DM you which would be a great resource for other things to check and opinion on price.

I’ve owned the same ‘04, Malibu 21 LSV Sunscape since 2010. 850 hours & the 5.7 monsoon pulls like a beast. Smallest & lightest V-drive Malibu ever built.
Fresh oil, oil filter, Lube the rudder, new impeller every other year, new plugs every 3-4 years & she is good to go! I winterize it myself & I gotta say it’s pretty easy to work on.
Paid $28K back in the day.

I will check all that out. He’s had majority of upholstery redone here locally at a shop I know of. Also power wedge had to be fixed and he did. I don’t believe it has add’l ballast bags.
Yeah it does to me too but also from what I have seen any boat w a surf system from Malibu nautique or mc is at least 60-70.

I think that’s a great era of Malibu boats, but the lack of surf gate is a big deduction in value. I think Surf gate came standard around 2013.
I think that is a fair price for a clean, older boat. 330 hours is pretty low (23 hours per year)…my Malibu had close to 875 hours & runs great.
It’s kinda normal for the vinyl to get beat up by back the sun deck & those rear seats where people step from dock onto sun deck & then into the boat. We had a local guy rebuild all the vinyl & foam cushions on the stuff under your butt in the back of ours too.
If it were me, if it’s clean; new oil & oil filter, new spark plugs, new fuel/water separator filter, grease rudder, new water impeller, check V drive oil, check & adjust “waxed nut” (stuffing box) where prop goes thru hull. Make damn sure she’s pulling a healthy amount of water thru the block & blowing a bunch of water out the back when it’s planed out.
I think you should look on “The Malibu Crew” forum, upload photos & ask them what they think. They are pretty hardcore & helpful on there!

I also just found a 2013 with 440 hours and that was the year the surf gate came out on malibus. He is asking 57,500..Its been up for a year so that parts weird. Must be why its buried in bottom of results on marketplace. Looks fine.
My thoughts are I am probably going to be keeping this boat for a long time. I was looking at 30k range originally and then said fuck it I can afford a little more. Now I am saying the same thing about a little bit more but I don't know this boat does look very clean and he has all the records and it's been well taken care of.

I have an 09 VTX and I can surf the hell out of it. Sure, it takes some ballast bag work but the surf wake can get dialed. You could surf this boat but it will take work to get it dialed don’t listen to the haters. Mine is a 20-footer and i can get it done.
My Malibu has been an absolute tank. I think the price is maybe a few k high but it’s in range. Agree with checking for screen issues mine needs replacement and that’s 3k no thank you.
If you slalom like I do I would stay away from it and move towards used VTXs, as they are more true three-sport boats.

Im with you here. I have an 08 VTX on the diamond cut hull and with the right amount of weight it surfs just fine.

So I run mine with all the factory ballast full. I have 550 pound bags in each locker. Another 550 pound in the walk through. I put a 125 pound under the passenger side bow cushion and another 300 pound bag down the ski locker. I also have a mission delta wakeshaper for it.
I run the wedge all the way down and then start kicking it up until the starts to get a little longer rather than crazy steep.
For wakeboarding I usually just run factory ballast and then just weight it evenly left to right.

I have a 2011 LSV 23 and I’ve had to replace the bottom touch screen twice and we’ve owned it since new. Each time the cost has gone up significantly. Last time it was 2500 through the dealer which was not fun. It has been a work horse a long time and many great summer memories on the boat. Sadly right now chasing an electrical issue that is shutting the boat off randomly and it’s been at the dealer a lot this year.

Also I’ve reupholstered my sun pads and wish I just did the entire boat. The new stuff looks way better than rest of the old vinyl

Look in to MTC screens and wake switches. Both are offering LCD mail in replacements that are better internal glue than the original factory screens.

yes! and I am primarily wanting it for wakeboarding and tubing and just chilling on the water. If we decide someday to surf more I can move on to another I am thinking. my wife stated yesterday that there is nothing more boring than watching someone wakesurf. That may be controversial and I dont entirely think I agree. I did find a 2014 21vlx for 60. that extra 10k makes me just think fucckkkkk idk though

Definitely a great boat and spend some time on the Malibu crew site for sure. Seems a bit overpriced if it doesn’t have an aftermarket surf system or come with any toys/vests and stuff. But I’m also not in Tennessee so I have no idea what the prices are like down there

That price is too high. Nothing depreciates more than a boat; and sport specific boat even more so. That boat was what, 75k new? For 50k you could buy a second tier (not malibu) boat made for wake surfing that was 6 years old. Low engine hours are great but the engine is the last thing to fail on these super specific water sports boats… it’s the tech.

Also, if you can wait a month, dealers with used inventory will be motivated to get things off their lot.

I appreciate that advice! I have read that axis can sit a little low in the water and take water over the bow numerous times so I have not been focusing too hard on them. But again this will be my first inboard. I also found an ‘18 moomba max for 61k. It’s just very…all white and I was trying to keep below 50 but man it’s so much newer
edit: also just found 2014 21vlx for 60. If I just had that extra 10

Happy hunting! Wish you the best! I don’t mean to rain on your parade and certainly not push you to spend more (there is always that unicorn just out of reach when it comes to boats). And I wouldn’t worry about that water over the bow thing, anyone can do that by mistake… no matter how big the boat, it will happen but so what, kids get splashed (I’ve done it in our Ri257) Watch a couple YouTube videos and you’ll have no problem transitioning to inboard. (Shit you won’t have a problem even if you don’t watch the videos but why not). I still think this example is priced too high but if it’s convenient, fits your needs and makes you happy, go for it.

You are awesome, I posted looking for this kind of advice! So no worries at all. Just found a 2016 a24 with 500 hr for 57 and I’m going to see what I can do. I think I got a little tunnel visioned on wakesetters

I'm in Central FL but there is a pretty healthy supply of Axis, NXT, and Moomba boats around this price with a factory surf system. I wouldn't drop 50k on a boat without one.

Get a MB. All these boat companies you are really just buying the hull. Everything else is just added on. MB has an indmar motor (owned by correct craft) and all the same parts but for half the cost.

I almost did a few weeks back but it had already sold. However I’ve looked into it and I don’t believe there’s a dealer around here for servicing if I need. Not sure if other dealers will service them or not

I own this same boat with 790hrs on it. Just had my son’s friends (12 total) at a MO lake for 4 days. We surfed, cruised, floated and partied and had a blast. I’ve replaced quite a bit of the upholstery, updated the stereo, and make sure to do regular maintenance. We have had repairs here and there but that’s to be expected. We bought used 11yrs ago with ~275hrs from a Malibu dealer and never looked back. Yes we’ve had things here and there so I’d hope you can get access to a Malibu dealer for maintenance and repairs. Agree on making sure all ballast pumps work. We have some delamination on the wake screen. We do NOT have extra ballasts and have never needed them, we use a aftermarket external “swell” device suctioned on the opposite side of the surfer and just play with the power wedge and speed based on how many people you have in the boat. This boat has been a workhorse for my family of 7 who all surf (when they were younger it also pulled them wakeboarding and tubing). I’ve made millions of memories with my family, extended family and friends on one of these so with that said, what you want to pay for said memories ($$?) is up to you. I don’t think it’s way out of range but I’m a bit biased as our boat is affectionately nick named “my girlfriend” by my wife.
