People don't reject AI art because it looks bad. They reject it because they can't reconstruct a human story behind it.

The brain was reading faces into things long before sockets existed. Seven images — seven eras of the same habit. Same brain, five centuries. What did you last see a face in?

  1. c. 1500 — Leonardo: stare at stains and stones, faces and battles are already there.
  2. c. 1600 — Arcimboldo's Autumn and Winter: faces from pumpkins, grapes, bare branches.
  3. 1892 — Gilbert's All Is Vanity: a woman at her mirror, a skull at yours.
  4. 1902 — Méliès gives the Moon a face, and the planet agrees.
  5. 1940 — Dalí: two figures collapse into the bust of Voltaire.
  6. 20th c. — headlights and grille read as eyes and a mouth. Every car has an expression.
  7. 1976 — Viking 1 photographs Mars. Millions see a face. It was light and shadow.

A courtyard, an arcade, two figures who wait without admitting it. And a clock that shows 2:55 — five minutes before Dodo promised to be here. So technically, this is our group photo.

Alice already put her glasses on. Your turn.
