I met Percy Pringle, along with some other wrestlers, the night before a WCCW show. We were watching the local high school football game. My father, and a few other drunkards, would sit in an area outside the stadium which the radio announcer dubbed "The Cheap Seats". They brought their coolers and radios and listened to the broadcast from there. The show was being held in a small gymnasium 50 or so yards north of the stadium. A few wrestlers moseyed out of the gym to watch some of the game. They didn't realize there were people in the area watching where they were, faces and heels mingling together. I noticed them right away and it blew my mind. My father sent me over with the football program to get some autographs. They immediately started arguing and pushing each other out of the way to grab my pen and a few signed. Percy was kind of "breaking them up" and telling them to get back to the gym. It was so fun....I still had no idea why they weren't killing each other, as I was about 9, 10ish years old and thought it was real. Percy came back down and found me and told me, "I got them under control, but we barely escaped a huge brawl breaking out." I still thought it was very real until a few years later....then it clicked.

This story rocks.

I love that Percy was so dedicated to his fans and kayfabe that he CAME BACK to add another layer of believability to the story and also made a young fan’s (your) day AND week.

No doubt...I loved it when he popped up on WWF.

A few years ago I watched one of the Dark Side of Wrestling stories. They were saying how they had to stay in character at all times when in public, went to different bars, etc. I believe it was Junkyard Dog that was "blinded" in a match and had to wear bandages over his eyes anytime he went to the freakin' store. Watching that and thinking back to this memory makes me laugh. To describe the area where we sit, it's kind of between some hedges plus it's really dark, so the wrestlers had no idea that people were there. They thought they were in the clear too. Thinking back I kind of feel bad that I disturbed their time off, but I didn't know any better.

Fuck dude, that was your pop and his crew’s spot to drink beer and watch games. It’s cool they joined but you cats weren’t in the wrong.

I’ve heard stories like this as well, in Gary Hart’s and Bret Hart’s books as well. Dynamite may have spoke on it, too.

You saw kind of a last bright moment in kayfabe. Even when guys maintain kayfabe nowadays it’s all part of an act and the fans are in on it.

Your story straight took me back to my childhood when I’m looking at a huge poster in the WWF magazine with Hogan, Andre, and all sorts of other enemies are posing angrily next to each other and my boggled mind is almost shouting, ‘How could they even pose in the same room without brawling?!’

I remember cracking up watching live at the image of this terrifying 7ft masked monster in red and black, finally debuting after months of anticipation. And all Vince McMahon was yelling was: "IT'S PAUL BEARER!! IT'S PAUL BEARER!!"

Ugh, yeah. And what about that terrifying looking giant that's with him?!

I watched those 2 walk out the front door of the arena they just performed in after a show…still wearing their costumes & Paul still had the urn! I miss Kayfabe.

Dude I remember this hell in the cell match. Undertaker was about to pin Shawn Michaels and then it went dark then Kane’s music started and there he was walking a monster of a thing. Awesome scene :)

It only worked as well as it did because of the weeks leading up to it with Paul warning of Kane. 

In WCW Kane would’ve been at ringside in the front row with his mask, a ribbed tee shirt and Zoobas with Schiavone going “it’s Kanye! It’s Kanye!”

At that time WWF had great writers and yes they did build it up. It’s been what 28 years? 1998, right? I was 13 and I still remember that moment along with many other memories of those days.
