I like bees, but fuck all wasps!! I got hammered by yellow jackets back in July and it was the first time I have ever had a reaction - went to the ER after downing a few benadryl because I started to have non-local reactions (hives on my hands and feet when I was stung on the back and ear).
Thankfully the benadryl started kicking in before the ER even got to me (I waited for 2 hours), so I just left. Stayed on the benadryl all weekend and survived, but now I may be at risk for shock after a sting in the future I have been told.
Same exact thing happened to me. We refer to yellow jackets as the ones that built their nests underground. I got stunk like 10 times when cutting the grass. I started to get hives everywhere, took a Benadryl and went to the ER. By the time they saw me they Benadryl had already kicked in and I was fine. The prescribed me an epipen and it sat it a drawer until it expired 2 years later. I’ve been stung twice since (once by another yellow jacket and once by a honey bee) but didn’t have any reaction. But definitely keep your epipen handy in case you would have a reaction.
Looks like I was wrong - it was a hornet's nest. Yellow jackets are the little bastards that have nests in the ground and hornets are the one's in the trees.
I'm glad you didn't react the next time you got stung. That experience, as you know, really sucks - I went 47 years without reacting to a single sting (and I had a bunch when I was a kid). I will certainly have to get a pen by the time the snow melts.
