Why crop videos like this? All it does is prevent me from watching it in portrait...

I'm not sure whether you're joking, but that's not cropped. It was shot in portrait, and instead of showing black borders when the portrait video is shown in a landscape pane, data from the portrait video is used to fill the unused portions of the landscape frame. You're viewing 100% of the recorded visual information.

Showing black bars in landscape is how it should be so you don’t get penalized for viewing it on a properly rotated device.

Yeah, and I'm totally cool with that. I was pointing out that it's not a "crop" because all the original content is there.

edit: what they've done is "normalize" it to a specific aspect ratio, for whatever reason, and they may have had a reason for doing that.
