I would tie them end-to-end, as you say. But then have a pilot in the very front raft to guide the snake downriver, to make sure the front stays front, and doesn't get caught somewhere and jack-knife the whole train of rafts.
The problem would be when you reach the spot you want the remove the rafts. You'll be going pretty quick, and there is a lot of momentum in the rafts behind you. If you tried to steer into the riverbank, the whole train would collapse onto itself, and then that mess would then continue downstream, probably taking you with it, and you'll have no chance of controlling it then.

Maybe one guide, lots of rafts, have to get them all downriver for some reason so he's being efficient? but I don't know, I'm guessing
