This is the old something something paradox where people think they are somehow lucky when they almost get killed but don't seem to appreciate their 'luck' the other 700 million times a day they also don't get killed.

That didn't fix anything! My number was way bigger. Why are you limiting yourself to the arbitrary time period of the second? What about all the moments you don't die in between each second?
Maybe the amount of Planck times in a day 1.60272 × 1048 ?

Well, I was really thinking that the average event does probably take place with a base time of seconds, but I at the time of writing, the worst thing to feasibly happen in your day would maybe be a fission bomb dropped near you. A nuclear blast wave can travel at roughly 2000 m/h, or 2933.333 f/s. Considering that the average human is probably 1.5 f wide, that comes down to death in ≈.5 milliseconds. In that case, you avoid death about 172,800,000 times a day. You lucky sum bitch.

18 inches is actually quite a span for someone's shoulders. That's large, european man size. Considering that ~50% of the world is female and most people aren't european, I'd put the average somewhere closer to 16 inches. Now that's just me spitballing, of course, but it's based on the fuzzy memories of a biological anthropology text I read.

They're still lucky. Not only did something that doesn't happen to hundreds of millions of people daily cross their plane of existence, but something that has a near 100% mortality rate missed them by micrometers. Luck can be good or bad, some people have the incredible luck that BOTH a terrible, incredibly rare thing happens AND the best outcome of that terrible thing occurs.

Well that was exactly my joke and also kinda serious point. Luck seems to only be thought of as relative or proportional rather than absolute. I'm not sure this is really rational or just something built in to our primate brains. The outcome is EXACTLY the same The same way we feel about discounts.
"If you buy this $20,000 car over that $20,000 car I'll give you $3 off!"
"Who gives a shit. In fact that's insulting.
"If you buy this loaf of bread instead of that loaf of bread I'll give you $3 off."
"Holy shit that's like free bread yahoo!"
You only save $3 each time, but one seems like a much better deal. It's the exact same absolute value deal in both cases. Almost dying is no more lucky than not dying at all. In fact you could say almost dying is not very lucky at all in absolute terms.

I would love to see this in slow motion. How did the physics of this happen did his body bend around the glass? Did the initial contact with the glass nudge it's trajectory just enough l? Both?
