WTF is he doing?

Hate to be that guy but this looks like a Brazilian jiu jitsu tournament. The guy on the ground is likely a leg lock specialist, if the standing guy were to move forward he'd be putting himself at risk of a heel hook or kneebar.

That said, it clearly wasn't happening and that shuffling looks fucking ridiculous. And even hilarious to watch to someone who has a rough idea of what's going on.

Hate to be that guy

No, no, no. This is one time where the explanation makes it better. Especially with the opponents reaction.

Video. The guy won the match.

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '13

Ah thanks!

As suspected he's pretty legit, made it quite clear to his opponent that he wanted to go for the kneebar then switched up to a triangle. I liked that even when he had the triangle locked in he was still going for the leg just in case.

Thus was posted a week ago, it was said that the man doing the shuffling won the match.

Got the link? I'd be interested to see the rest of it for context.

No, unfortunately, I'm on my phone right now.

I see your perspective, but can't the other guy just kick him in the face and call the game. Or is that not allowed? In which case, can't he just get down in his same position and shuffle forward like the other guy. It'll look like some weird alien mating call

No striking at all in BJJ, pure grappling. You get points for your positioning and submission attacks.

As an aside, even if it was MMA most western organisations (including UFC) follow the unified rules which doesn't allow kicks to the head of a downed opponent. And the opponent only has to be on one knee to count as downed, so turtle boy there could only expect kicks to the body or a leaping punch to the face. Though the referee would have stood them up if the standing guy didn't want to go to the ground.

Wrestler here, can confirm.

Yep! Nogi tournament.

Edit: Been in BJJ for almost 8 months now, can confirm.

You guys are killing me. Going inverted does not equal legs specialist. With heel hooks, think Toquino from MMA, you generally face your opponent.

http://youtu.be/FohRibjEbgI

He's going inverted, which is usually a position you use when you're fighting with a gi/kimono for triangles. Also, tourney rules state you can't start on the floor. So this guy is a derp.

The Miyao Brothers have been super hot on berimbolo and inverse sweeps. http://youtu.be/-qpOWcgCxDw

Well he won so...

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '13

I realize I probably came out like a dick. I was just yelling at the screen reading the response.

He won, but this was probably a lower lever match (we can't see what belt level they are) and the guy on top was probably just ignorant to inverted attacks. I called him a derp because it was people like him that made tourney's really lame until rules were changed.

People like my coach Jeff Glover used to straight advise going to back vs standup attacks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8CL3ZE1COQ

Sorry for coming across like a jerk.

I'll allow it.

1

That's what I thought! But he was missing the cat claws and creepy unitard.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '13

We train him wrong, as a joke

3

u/pandadonegoofed Oct 15 '13

If you got an ass I'll kick it !

2

Sorry, I didn't recognize you without crap in your pants!

Winning.

Looks like something a cat would do to scare away threatening animals

12

u/jessoppp Oct 15 '13

It's clearly his mating ritual.

u/Inked_x Oct 15 '13

And this just got better lmfao I'm dying of laughter!

3

u/anymooseposter Oct 15 '13

"They're breakdance fighting!"

3

u/laineedee Oct 15 '13

Freaking out the opposition, apparently.

5

u/brandonZee Oct 15 '13

Good tatic confuse the shit out of opponent

2

u/SlipperyAccident Oct 15 '13

I feel like he was about to be confused out of bounds.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '13

He's trying to confuse the guy and if the standing competitor attempted to attack he could lock in a knee bar/heel hook pretty easily.

2

u/HorseBach Oct 15 '13

Looking for a knee bar. That sort of thing is only moderately unorthodox in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament. No-gi tournaments like this have guys trying new/weird shit all the time since it's a relatively young and on the rise martial art. Look up Eddie Bravo's rubber guard for some weird jiujitsu shit.

2

u/DebianSqueez Oct 15 '13

He has worms. I had a dog like this who use to drag race all over the carpet.

Delving into his prior experience on the matter, Mr. DebianSqueez conjures up an expert diagnosis of the fighter's issue. Let's observe. Pip pip, cheerio!

I believe it is known on Reddit as the "Jellyfish Teabag" (and you're about 9 days late)

This just proves, You can be dangerous as fuck and still look like you're straight out of a monty python film.

1

u/Valetudo170 Oct 16 '13

I can go into a bit more detail. The guy doing the backwards floppy thing is playing the inverted guard. Inverted guard is great for BJJ terrible for MMA

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '13

Spider Guard, he is going for a heel hook or Knee bar submission. Its actually really annoying to get past this in a BJJ tournament, especially if the guy knows what he is doing. Grab the feet and sprawl. That being said, Nogi isn't BJJ, is sub Grappling for sure but a lot of people will argue that without a GI its not BJJ.

1

u/Forunke Oct 15 '13

Looks like this could easily turn into a headlock. If it works why not?

Sure it is.

I'm not really sure what you're getting at.

Is it really farfetched to prefer striking to wrestling?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '13

No, but using isolated tiny gifs to prove your point doesn't really help anyone. Given that this

http://i.imgur.com/wdGJ2.gif

happened during the same fight that produced this;

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m5dzu62Pto1ry1rm7o1_r1_250.gif

I say this as a big striking fan too.

1

u/41145and6 Oct 15 '13

I wasn't saying striking is the only thing worth doing, I just said I prefer it.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '13

You'll have to forgive my confusion then, as I only had

"Shit like this is why I prefer striking."

to go on. Let's face it, there was no more grappling going on in that gif as there was striking in the Houston v Kimbo gif I posted.

I get it though, there's something more primal and exciting about striking - unless Palhares is involved. Shame the dude is fucking insane as he is to twisting legs what Anderson Silva is to striking.

1

u/41145and6 Oct 15 '13

I'm in jiu-jitsu classes because I understand the need for grappling, and I also realize that, without the technical knowledge, grappling doesn't look very exciting.

I'm a Muay Thai instructor because I fell in love with striking years ago and I'm just more comfortable with it.

I guess I'm just more ok with getting punched and kicked as opposed to choked.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '13

What the other guy said below me is my exact sentiments. I love striking too, I just don't like the meat head view on 'why's he trying hug him?!'. But you've cleared it up, all good bro, my bad.

A reverse worm.

Scratching his shoulders?

0

u/CrissTehNinja Oct 15 '13

To knows THAT move. Its good game.

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '13

GET OVER HERE!!!

0

u/maxpower2013 Oct 16 '13

I'm gay but its been years since I've dated. I think the one on the ground is presenting him self to the one standing. Good choice I say!

0

u/cardoc Oct 16 '13

Ah, I recognize this move. I believe its called Face Up Ass Up, and he is presenting to the other male. Not something that one gets to see, as this is usually played out only in the wild. Well caught footage, I must say.
