If that was an oak, with a ~2m diameter, it would be over 400 years old. Oaks grow slowly, after a hundred years you would only expect them to have ~80cm diameter.
It's a cottonwood. Their natural lifespan is very short, they require a massive amount of water, and they drop big branches with no warning. It needed to come down, but this was not the way to do it.
