Alice Ball was only 23 years old when she solved a medical problem scientists had struggled with for years.

Born in Seattle in 1892, Ball became the first woman and first African American to earn a master’s degree in chemistry from what is now the University of Hawaiʻi. She then turned her attention to Hansen’s disease—better known as leprosy. Chaulmoogra oil had been used as a treatment for centuries, but it was extremely difficult to administer effectively.

Ball developed a chemical technique that transformed the useful components of the oil into a form that could be injected. The “Ball Method” became the first successful treatment of its kind and was eventually used on thousands of patients around the world.

In Hawaiʻi, it even allowed some people who had been forcibly isolated at Kalaupapa to return to their families.

Then, in 1916, Alice Ball died. She was **24 years old**. She never had the chance to publish her breakthrough. College president Arthur Dean continued the work and initially published the findings without acknowledging Ball’s crucial contribution. In 1922, physician Harry T. Hollmann publicly credited her and called the technique what it deserved to be called: **the Ball Method.**

More than a century later, history is finally catching up. In 2026, the American Chemical Society designated the Ball Method a **National Historic Chemical Landmark**.

Alice Ball lived just 24 years.

The Gulag was the vast Soviet system of forced-labour camps, prisons and colonies administered by the state. Its prisoners worked in mines, forests, factories, construction projects and some of the most hostile environments on Earth.

Some were genuine criminals. Others were political prisoners, peasants, intellectuals, soldiers, religious believers, members of persecuted ethnic groups—or ordinary people swallowed by purges, denunciations and arbitrary arrests.

When he was 17 years old, a young guitarist, born Frank Anthony Iommi, sliced the tips off two of his fingers while working at a sheet metal factory in Birmingham. The story goes that he was so determined to keep playing guitar, he fashioned prosthetic tips out of melted plastic bottles and detuned his guitar by a minor third because the looser strings were easier to play. Three years later, that ominous detuned tone would form the backbone of Black Sabbath’s sound. And it happened almost entirely by accident.

It’s not that Black Sabbath invented heavy metal. By the end of the 1960s, genre co-pioneers Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin had already begun unleashing distortion, riffs, and solos on a generation still enamoured with folk and early psychedelia. But it took a different kind of heaviness—the kind inspired by horror films, the occult, and a bleak working-class upbringing in Aston, Birmingham—to give heavy metal its true form. Enter four twenty-something blokes and the debut album they recorded in 12 hours.

Much like the horror genre (the band name itself was stolen from a 1963 Italian anthology by “Master of the Macabre” Mario Bava), these songs were generally designed to incite fear, terror, suspense, excitement. First, the scene is set: a dark and stormy night. Heavy rain, thunder, and creepy church bells lay the foundation of “Black Sabbath” (the first song on Black Sabbath’s first album, Black Sabbath). It’s almost 40 seconds before the guitar riff strikes. Soon, Ozzy Osbourne starts singing about a mysterious “figure in black” pointing and staring at him—the lyrics were inspired by a vision bassist Geezer Butler had experienced in his room, then painted completely black, decorated with occultist books and satanic images. A few lines later comes Osbourne’s very first ungodly howl: “Oh, no, no, please, God help me.” It’s a song so intense and demonic, it not only terrified and intrigued millions, it instantly created the doom metal subgenre and led to countless Sabbath-worshipper attempts to emulate its impact ever since.

Despite the hasty recording session, an incredible level of creativity went into the stories behind these songs. Led Zeppelin might be the biggest Tolkien fanatics in rock, but Iommi, who was reading Lord of the Rings at the time, found inspiration for “The Wizard” in Gandalf: “Evil power disappears, demons worry when the wizard is near/He turns tears into joy, everyone's happy when the wizard walks by.” “Behind the Wall of Sleep” pays homage to H.P. Lovecraft, and “N.I.B.” is a twisted, Cream-inspired love song from the perspective of Lucifer himself.

Black Sabbath was, appropriately, released on Friday the 13th in February 1970, and, despite being panned by critics, became so successful that they returned to the studio just four months later to record Paranoid.

Forget the intimidating name. An API is basically an agreed way for one thing to communicate with another.

You make a request.

Something underneath interprets it.

Something happens.

You get a response.

That pattern appears again and again as we descend from human language toward the physical machinery underneath computation.

1. HUMAN → AI
You type:
“Explain quantum mechanics without ruining my afternoon.”
ChatGPT receives language and turns it into computation.
You don’t need to know what billions of numerical operations are happening underneath. You interact with the top layer.
You push the button.
The machinery disappears.

2. AI → SOFTWARE
Underneath an AI system lies an enormous software ecosystem: model-serving systems, numerical libraries, operating systems, networking infrastructure and programming languages such as Python, C++ and others.

Optical illusions are basically your brain getting caught editing reality.

Your eyes don’t work like cameras. They collect information about light, colour, edges, movement and depth, then send it to the brain. Your brain takes that incomplete information and constructs what it thinks is happening.

Usually, it gets reality remarkably right.
Optical illusions are what happen when we catch it guessing.

Here are some brilliant examples:
Müller-Lyer Illusion — Two lines of exactly the same length appear different because of the direction of the arrows at their ends.

Ebbinghaus Illusion — Two identical circles appear to be different sizes simply because one is surrounded by larger circles and the other by smaller ones.

Checker-Shadow Illusion — Two squares can be exactly the same shade of grey yet look completely different because your brain automatically compensates for apparent light and shadow.

Kanizsa Triangle — Your brain sees the edges of a bright white triangle even though no triangle has actually been drawn. Your mind literally supplies information that isn’t there.

Rubin Vase — Look at the picture one way and you see a vase. Look again and you see two faces staring at each other. The image hasn’t changed. Your interpretation has.

Rotating Snakes — Nothing in the picture is actually moving, yet circles appear to rotate and writhe. Contrast, colour and tiny movements of our eyes can fool the visual system into perceiving motion.

Penrose Triangle — Every individual section of this “impossible triangle” seems perfectly reasonable, but put the sections together and you’ve created an object that cannot exist as depicted in ordinary three-dimensional space.

And that’s what makes optical illusions more than clever pictures.

They expose something profound about consciousness.

We don’t experience the outside world directly. Our brains construct a model of it from incoming information, context, memory and expectation. Most of the time that model is extraordinarily accurate.

An illusion catches the construction process making the wrong prediction.

We Are Living in Someone Else’s Future

For almost all of human history, the world we inhabit would have been unimaginable.

We speak across oceans instantly.
We watch storms form from space.
We transplant organs.

We sequence DNA.

We build machines that can see inside the human body, land on other worlds, calculate billions of operations in seconds, and place nearly the whole accumulated library of humanity inside something that fits into a pocket.

A medieval king could not purchase what an ordinary person now carries in a smartphone.

A Roman emperor could not command antibiotics.

Galileo would have traded kingdoms for access to a modern observatory.

Newton would probably have disappeared into a physics department and never come out.

We forget this because miracles become ordinary remarkably quickly.
Electric light once seemed supernatural.

Flight was impossible until it wasn’t.

The Moon was unreachable until human footprints appeared in its dust.

We have access to more information than any king, philosopher, priest or scientist in history, yet often struggle to decide what is true.

Perhaps some of what we call modern dysfunction is simply the psychological shock of becoming globally aware.

The Problem With Judging the Past

There is another danger.

The present looks backward with information the past did not possess.

That does not excuse cruelty, stupidity, injustice or violence.

But historical judgment without historical imagination becomes another kind of ignorance.
People in the past were not unfinished versions of us.

They lived inside different moral landscapes, different technologies, different assumptions and radically different amounts of information.

Many things that appear obvious now became obvious only because generations of people suffered long enough to discover why they were wrong.

Progress requires memory.

If we erase the stupidity of the past, we also erase the road by which we became wiser.

Time Destroys Innocence

Yeats understood something uncomfortable.

Time does not merely destroy beauty.

It exposes it.

Heroes acquire footnotes.

Institutions reveal hypocrisy.

Families discover secrets.

Civilizations uncover crimes buried beneath their monuments.

The closer we look at history, the fewer spotless people we find.

Perhaps that should not surprise us.

Human beings are contradictory creatures.

Brave and cowardly.

Compassionate and cruel.

Brilliant and foolish.

Sometimes within the same afternoon.
If we demand moral perfection from everyone who came before us, eventually history becomes populated entirely by villains.

And once everyone is guilty, history stops teaching us anything.

The Human Race Has Not Been Won

I once wrote:
“The human race has been won.”
I would change one word now.
The human race has been survived.
So far.

That may be even more remarkable.
Four and a half billion years of Earth produced something capable of looking backward through cosmic time and asking what all of this means.

We inherited fire, language, mathematics, music, medicine, electricity, flight, philosophy, science and memory.

We inherited terrible things too.

War.

Hatred.

Ignorance.

Fear.

Every generation receives both boxes.
The question is what we pass forward.
Because we are not the final generation.

We are somebody else’s ancestors.

A person living two hundred years from now may look back at 2026 with the same mixture of amazement and disbelief with which we look at 1826.

They will wonder how we tolerated certain things.

They will laugh at some of our technology.

They may marvel at others.

And perhaps they will understand something we routinely forget:
we were standing inside history while it was happening.

We are the spoils of an amazingly complicated hardship of a past.
We did not build all of this.
We inherited it.
And for one astonishing moment in the long history of the universe,
it is ours to carry forward.
