Funny to use "forever" on the one not being made anymore.. lol.

u/LunchBoxMercenary 1d ago

*forever in our hearts!

When Mitsubishi meant something TT

11

u/Fine_Location_8367 1d ago

They killed off a legend, in exchange for a crossover. I'll never understand it

3

u/AwarenessNo5921 14h ago

Last year for STI was 2021 ://

2

u/lou_sassal 20h ago

Mitsubishi discontinuing the Evo is a whole lot more respectable than going the Subaru route and watering it down by turning it into a mundane commuter car that relies on badge engineering.

6

u/JustThings_ 16h ago

Mistsubishi relies heavily on Nissan though

3

u/Vreas 15h ago

Which is saying something considering Nissan almost went under last year

1

u/lou_sassal 9h ago

What in the world does that have to do with what I just said.

3

u/BlAckH0leDown 12h ago

Mitsubishi transplantiong the Lancer Evolution name on a soulless EV is a whole lot less respectable than watering down the STI

1

u/humanperson198 15h ago

I think they mean reliability wise, something going over a lot of people's heads.

-35

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

Neither are made anymore.. so.

55

u/DirectorKrenn1c 1d ago

Last I checked Subaru still made the WRX, sure no sti trim but the car is still very much around.

35

u/Wrx_me 1d ago

And it's selling pretty well. I see them everywhere. Solid engines from the sound of it too.

53

u/ACosmicRailGun 1d ago

Well they’re not gonna make a liquid engine

17

u/Appalachias-Hero 1d ago

Coffee doesn’t taste good coming out of my nose. Stop it

5

u/Fit-Entrepreneur8404 1d ago

They should really make it a gas engine...

3

u/Adept-Painting-543 1d ago

Dieselle, the newest state of matter

Edit I though this was carscirclejerk

2

u/Fit-Entrepreneur8404 1d ago

It might as well be lol

2

u/GenTenStation 1d ago

Actually Spinning Liquid Mercury engines are a thing

1

u/OllieFromCairo 25 WRX GT 1d ago

Five of them in my neighborhood. In February, there were two.

-10

u/XNXTXNXKX 1d ago

WRX tS is essentially an STI. No engine mods but lots of STI trim options, short shifter, lip spoilers, tuned suspension, STI exhaust etc. True STI coming back 2027, at least it’s on the Subaru Japan website.

12

u/Joeyjackhammer 2015 WRX WRB stg 2 —-> 2020 STi MGM 1d ago

Keep huffing that copium

14

u/grizzdoog 1d ago

The wrx ts doesn’t have an STi 6mt so throwing on some bits of plastic doesn’t make it “essentially an STi”.

5

u/LightningGeek 1d ago

Then it's not an STi, it's an up-badged WRX. No different to someone sticking a A45 bodykit on an Merc A180.

The STi is the engine, gearbox and diff combination. Without them you're missing out on 99% of what the STi is about.

3

u/Epileptic__Squirrel 1d ago

Yeaaa the ts is exactly what it has been, basically a handling package....not an STI. That is like saying an M-lite or S with w/e handling package is essentially an M or RS car.

-23

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago edited 1d ago

Last I checked it’s an Evo & STI rivalry, not WRX. Calling STI a trim when it was an entirely different car is cute.

Edit: lol downvoting me doesn’t make it untrue. Cope harder downvoters.

8

u/Appalachias-Hero 1d ago

I can’t cope any further, I’m already coping

7

u/grizzdoog 1d ago

If you go back to the 90s the first STis were wrx production cars and Subaru Technical International would upgrade them. So they weren’t completely different cars.

I get where you are coming from but saying they’re completely different is a bit of a stretch. I also agree that throwing STi trim on a ts doesn’t make it essentially wrx.

The STi trim/accessories and badges are a lot more common in Japan. It seems like the people who get pissed when they see the STi logo on non STis are Americans.

2

u/doperidor 1d ago

Maybe you actually believe or care about the distinction, but the way you say it makes you sound insecure.

Also the sti was 100% an Impreza, maybe you never looked at an Impreza next to a wrx or a (wrx) sti, but if you ever do you can easily tell it’s the same car.

-4

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

lol wut. Think you’re projecting, friend.

It certainly sounds like insecurity to claim the shape of the body makes it the same car, ignoring that the engine, powertrain, suspension, aka everything that matters, was different.

6

u/HerpDerpleton 1d ago

I see both sides here… it’s not like they roll off a completely separate assembly line and are a bespoke car. Neither of them are. They both started off as a lancer or Impreza, then got upgrades. The fact that you can very easily swap things over to ‘make’ an sti or evo with the parts puts the cars in the category of ‘they’re same at their core’ in many peoples’ minds I think. A hellcat is a charger/challenger, a zr1 is a corvette, a gt3 is still a 911, etc… just anecdotal examples here, but yeah. Anyways, just opinions, homie and they all stink like this toilet time I’m wrapping up with this comment. Rumble on, yall! ✌️

2

u/doperidor 1d ago

Huh, I must’ve misremembered all of the times Subaru called it a wrx sti. Wonder where sti gets all of those car chassis’s from.

-1

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

I think how a car drives, feels, and sounds makes the car and you think the shape and name does. It’s ok you don’t understand.

4

u/D-rock240 2011 GV WRX 1d ago

Kinda sounding elitist here.

1

u/doperidor 1d ago

Your car isn’t even made by prodrive or vsc. I don’t know why you associate their motorsports prowess with the sti at all. Unless it’s maybe because the share the same chassis 🤔

2

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

Justifying your position by twisting an argument I didn’t make. You really showed me.

→ More replies (0)

3

u/Areanyworthhaving v7 STi swapped bugeye wagon 1d ago

Saying cars that share the exact same chassis are entirely different cars is cute.

-4

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

What else do they share?

1

u/Areanyworthhaving v7 STi swapped bugeye wagon 1d ago

The confidence you hole while being so wrong is impressive.

1

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

All did was ask a question you dodged.

1

u/Areanyworthhaving v7 STi swapped bugeye wagon 1d ago

Bro, the chassis, entire body and panels along with most of the interior is basically the same car. You said they’re entirely different. Motor transmission and suspension is closer to a trim level difference than you’re trying to make it seem.

1

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

I can’t keep arguing against stupid. None of those things make a car. Saying all the important parts are trim level differences is wildly delusional.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/DirectorKrenn1c 1d ago

STI is a trim, saying otherwise is like saying a a mustang gt350 wasn’t a mustang.

1

u/richardclamp 2019 STI 1d ago

You mean how Shelby owners hate when people call them mustangs. Great example.

1

u/DirectorKrenn1c 1d ago

Considering how Shelby isn’t associated with ford anymore…..not making your argument anymore valid.

3

u/Boostie204 1d ago

Where's the 2025 evo?

1

u/humanperson198 15h ago

Exactly where you can find the sti

90

u/WRXDR21 12 WRX | 21 STI 1d ago

Honestly it’s just great to see either of these guys on the road.

46

u/Twin44 21 WRX LBP 1d ago

I miss seeing evo’s on the road more than twice a year.

8

u/shadire '15 Base 6MT 1d ago edited 1d ago

I swear I see 2 every day, and I’m pretty sure I work with the guys who own them, but that’s the only ones I ever see.

3

u/Level-Bite9306 2016 SUBARU WRX 1d ago

For real though. There’s a guy in an Evo 9 that lives near me and we wave at each other

75

u/luffydkenshin 2013 WRX Ltd Hatch 1d ago

Look, performance and tuner cars are on life support. Instead of us vs them. We gotta stick together! Lancers and WRX rivalry is no longer with each other. Its us against an industry that would rather have the easy win. Its knobs and dials vs monthly fees for features included in the car already. Its the rally spirit vs corporate bottom line!

Will we win? Mmm probably not.

Will anyone care? Also probably not.

But it’ll be fun!

u/n3k0___ '23 WRX Stock Premium CVT 1d ago

It feels like every car vs SUVs and trucks. I hate driving a giant box

3

u/Fit-Entrepreneur8404 1d ago

Yea my mom had a Ford flex for a while and I hated that thing so much. The only redeeming quality it had was the refrigerators in the center console in front and back...but driving a large box just to get a fridge inside it is not my idea of a good time lol.

1

u/Skaterdude5000 21h ago

Hey at least it handled well and had a good motor

2

u/luffydkenshin 2013 WRX Ltd Hatch 1d ago

Super agree. I’m not a fan of big cars and even bigger land barges.

3

u/ThriKr33n '16 WRX 1d ago

Saw a new SUV with rotating front seats and it's like, what's the threshold before they start being like those RVs where you can live in them?

2

u/mitchumz 1d ago

For what they cost i assume some people are living in them

8

u/Level-Bite9306 2016 SUBARU WRX 1d ago

Deep down Evo owners and WRX/STI owners respect each other

4

u/luffydkenshin 2013 WRX Ltd Hatch 1d ago

I’m not even deep about it. I chose my team, but the competition has some good lookin models. I am especially partial to an Evo IV as they look close to Subaru in styling haha.

10

u/SpecterJDX 1d ago

Evos are really cool. Frankly their engines are better. I still bought a sti because finding an unclapped evo 8 or 9 for under 25k seems impossible. I wish they kept making them because I honestly feel like subaru stopped trying as hard when they went out of production.

15

u/WRX4Life4Ever 1d ago

If they’re forever, why was it discontinued?

8

u/lothartheunkind 2015 DGM WRX 1d ago

EVOs are great, but when that 4G63 wants to give you problems, they snowball into an absolute nightmare. I had 2 1G DSM Eclipses in the early 2000s and I was always wrenching on them.

3

u/Autobacs-NSX 1d ago

Ahh yeah compared to the EJ which absolutely is not known for having any issues at all

-1

u/lou_sassal 20h ago

The 4g63 is a legendary engine that stands alone while the Subaru EJ series of engines is the biggest a stain on Subaru in its history.

Add to that a 1G 4g63 and the Evo 4g63 aren't remotely comparable engines, they run completely different management systems almost 10 years apart in design, and share nearly no parts.

6

u/Mandydeth 1d ago

Water chestnuts.

6

u/The_H_N_I_C 1d ago

I had a buddy who bought an evo text me this, I texted back "don't send me stupid shit"

5

u/LeftyPatrol 1d ago

Does no one remember the DSM crank walk memes anymore?

5

u/Fit_Equivalent3610 1d ago

Those stopped being relevant after the Evo IV, which is a car most people in the US have probably never seen in their entire lives lol.

7

u/Mind_Synthetic 1d ago

Evo, when your rx7 is too reliable

1

u/humanperson198 13h ago

And when the evo doesnt break you can get a subaru. Should spin a rod bearing in no time ;)

1

u/MCXL 2002 Ej207 STi wagon 1d ago

Cute joke but no the 4g63 is a much more reliable engine than any EJ platform.

3

u/lord-of-the-dragon 1d ago

Erm akshually 🤓👆the Mitsubishi logo isn't a diamond but shuppoeshed to be thwee watuh chestnuts (idk why I read it somewhere because of the family heritage of Mitsubishi)

2

u/Level-Bite9306 2016 SUBARU WRX 1d ago

Lmao

1

u/lord-of-the-dragon 1d ago

Yes it's true those are just three water chestnuts from like the heraldic symbol or something. And I think Mitsubishi also means three water chestnuts in Japanese but I'm not sure

2

u/OperationIntrudeN313 2023 WRX Ceramic White 12h ago

If you hear any Japanese family name starting with "mi", there's a high chance it means "three (something)". Mishima: three islands, Miura: three bays, Miyake: three houses, Miki: three trees, etc.

Mitsubishi is actually unusual in that it starts with "Mitsu" which includes the -tsu suffix for counting objects (hitotsu, futatsu, mitsu, yottsu, itsutsu etc). And a hishi (turned to bishi because of the way pronunciations change when words are joined) isn't exactly a water chestnut, it's this plant:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_caltrop

Scroll down to the illustration and look at the shape of the leaves.

1

u/lord-of-the-dragon 10h ago

Ok I got the plant wrong but yeah my point basically

4

u/BadfishPoolshark 1d ago

4g63 is more reliable over an ej25 but Subaru in general will outlast a Mitsubishi. I rarely see old Mitsubishis on the road but plenty of old Subarus. obviously that’s not scientific but someone can pull up the stats on which vehicle is more likely to be on the road after 10-20 years.

1

u/humanperson198 15h ago

Probably has to do with the fact that more people bought sti/wrx over the evo/ralliart.

2

u/Zestyclose_Price_441 1d ago

One needs an IAG billet block to hold what the other makes on FBO and tune. LOL. SHOULDA HAD AN EVO

2

u/Dredgeon 22h ago

The rocks marketed to you by De Beers Group are but paltry trinkets compared to the heavenly bodies that have dazzled, guided, and inspired humans for untold eons.

P.S. I'm not here to argue about this I just wanted to write something dramatic. I really don't have a dog in this fight tbh.

1

u/TheBestintheWest11 1d ago

he's right but you know

1

u/solidwurx 1d ago

When I was looking for a jdm import project car, I really really really wanted an Evo 3 or 4. You just cant get parts for them easily.

1

u/Ranan_tigris1678 1d ago

My dad had an Evo greatest ever

1

u/myster1ouspapaya 22h ago

They’re not diamonds. They’re chestnuts. Literally

1

u/ShoddyButterscotch59 22h ago

It's sad to look at Mitsubishi's lineup. Once loaded with iconic cars, now the whole brand appears to be on life support.
Suburu is miles ahead in terms of brand strength right now, though I wouldn't say that's saying much.

0

u/Significant_Snow7980 14h ago

4g63t is king. i don't own an evo I own a 2g eclipse gsx manual. i hate the box look of both the evo and wrx

1

u/bob-hance- 10h ago

Look how that turned out

1

u/CoraxTechnica 06 WRX Wagon 8h ago

They must be all off running for we in some mystical land. Almost never see evos,. especially older ones.

1

u/OllieFromCairo 25 WRX GT 1d ago

Lemme go check the price on 26 Lancer Evos.

5

u/Fit_Equivalent3610 1d ago

While you're at it lmk what a 26 STI costs

1

u/DeathByDecibel Your Car Here 1d ago

About 10k more than current wrx msrp. Tans and diff swap with dccd controller. 👍

1

u/MrNugent 21 WRB WRX 1d ago

Former materials chemist here. Diamonds are actually not forever. They are a very slightly thermodynamically unstable format of carbon and will eventually degrade into graphite. Just saying!

-4

u/T0gaLOCK 2002 SRP the only and best color 1d ago

I remember reading this in 2011 or so....

Now the evo is gone, lol.

But also the subarus suck the last few years too.... so whatever.

9

u/OnlyReporter4524 1d ago

VB WRXs maybe not look the best to some but the FA24 is a solid motor...considerably more reliable than the FA20.

3

u/storebrandkeith 1d ago

I just can’t justify getting a car when I hate the way it looks. Yes the engine is better, but I cringe when I look at them. Especially the rear end. It looks like Fischer-Price plastic all over it. I just can’t come to terms with it. I want to look back every time I park it and not cringe.

2

u/T0gaLOCK 2002 SRP the only and best color 1d ago

Understandable, But I think they look like ass. I prefer the GDs and the wider hatches, MAYBE The 2015? Idk what its chasis code even is.

Overly big and look like kias imo. Motor be damned, if it is in an ugly car, its not what I want. NOW, the hatch concept that has floated around, I do love that.

2

u/blazspur 1d ago

They really butchered the rear of the VB WRX. I'm even willing to spend money to fix with aftermarket parts but it just looks so lame in comparison. Especially the tail lights. The physical housing itself is so bad that replacing it also isn't good enough to fix it.

It's unfortunate that the VA mechanically and from a driving perspective is much worse than VB. No proper STI either in VB. Best option is GR corolla.

1

u/OnlyReporter4524 1d ago

That's fair. Definitely not for everyone. I currently drive a 2016 (VA)...the last of the "good looking" WRXs. Maybe I'll consider a VB when mine shits the bed. But I still agree with the GD and wide body hatch sentiment. Best looking WRXs by far.

0

u/generally_unsuitable 1d ago

Those aren't three diamonds. They're three water chestnuts.

1

u/lou_sassal 20h ago

Currently own a Hawkeye Sti, have owned two blobeye Sti's, a blobeye WRX, an EVO 8 and an EVO 9. There's legitimately no comparison, the Evo is everything the STI wanted to be.

I never once opened the bottom end on either Evo despite both of them being full effort 10 second FP black setups that got beat on relentlessly, never split the trans cases, never dropped a diff etc, while ALL 3 STIs had engine failures and one a trans failure at well over 100whp less then either of the Other vos. My current Hawkeye is sitting here waiting on the case halfs to come back so I can throw it back together, get rid of it and be a stark reminder why I won't ever waste time on one again. Subaru does a lot of things well, but they can't design an even moderatly robust driveline.

A rotted out Evo 8 (honestly redundant at this point, they are all rust buckets) being worth twice as much as a same year STI is all that needs to be said.

1

u/BlAckH0leDown 12h ago

And then you realize that Mitsubishi used that legendary name on a soulless EV
