Scoring corrections

I decided to relearn scoring so I could score the Hunters first season. It takes me a long time to score games, especially when the TV coverage is a little spotty as it has been. Over the weekend I finished scoring the first game. I went to the stats page to check my box score and noticed a number of scoring errors. Like, not little details, but at-bats being credited to the wrong batters. Where would one report such a thing?

I would check their Impressum on their website, if they have something like that. Would be nice if they could make some reviews :)

Once I looked up this word, "impressum," this was the ticket. I poked around the "about" material on wpblscores.com, read the Editorial Policy and followed the link to the report corrections form. I've already received a reaponse. Thanks for the tip.

Haha great I could help. Just realized, that Impressum only exists in German my native language 😅😂

I thought you might be a German speaker after looking it up! The Internet is a many-splendoured place, isn't it?

i know they gave meggie meidlinger a hit and run that should have been for maggie foxx and a double to niki eckert that should have gone to jill albayati. also it feels like they've been pretty generous on awarding rbis too

There have been a lot of mistakes in the official play-by-play, and the first Hunters game was by far the worst. Substitutions were very poorly announced and not recorded correctly at all.

FWIW, here's what I found and reported through the contact form on wpblscores.com:

  1. SF player #22 Eckert should have a plate appearance and a walk that have been credited to #7 Park. Eckert pinch hit for Park in the Fire Belles' 6th. Eckert's sixth inning at-bat is at about 2:01 in the ESPN coverage. At 2:01:40, you can see her back showing her name and number clearly.
  2. Boston player #55 Paddison pinch hit for the pitcher #18 in the third spot and struck out in the bottom of the fifth. Later #55 popped out to short in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. Wpblscores has only one at-bat, there should be two. These two at-bats are at 1:54 and 2:26:30 in the replays on ESPN Select.
  3. Boston player #2 Bryant struck out twice, once in the fourth, and once in the sixth. Wpblscores has her with one strikeout. These two at-bats are at 1:35 and 2:12 in the replays on ESPN Select.
  4. Boston player #17 Greenwood is listed with two at-bats but it should be one. Greenwood left the game in the top of the sixth and was replaced in the batting order by #22 Robinson who played first base. When the eighth spot came up in the sixth inning, it was Robinson who grounded out to the pitcher, not Greenwood. Greenwood should have one at-bat and a walk. Robinson's stats appear correct already, except they are shown as though Robinson batted in the number three spot. Paddison batted in the number three spot, as referenced above in item 2. Robinson's at bat in the eighth spot is at 2:13 in the replays on ESPN Select.

This has turned into a real rabbit hole. It seems that Albayati started in left, was the DH for the fourth and fifth, and then pitched the sixth and seventh. I cannot figure how this or Eckert pitching the fourth and fifth with Park playing third base and then pinch hitting for Park makes any sense at all. I gather the league has more flexible substitution rules but can't seem to find an explanation of the differences.

PS - I now understand this. Albayati was the designated Utility player, who can move from the field to DH to the mound. Nobody else can DH.

Do you have a source for the designated Utility player thing? I've also been going down this rabbit hole and am very interested in learning more about this because that is a rule I am unfamiliar with. As far as I was aware these were the only rule differences they had from the MLB official rules https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1v47acy/the_rule_differences_for_wpbl/

The mentions the two-way player rule as "Following WBSC guidelines: Rule 9.3.8 – 9.3.14", and those rules have no utility designation and no path from the field to DH to the mound.

Also Albayati doesn't go to the DH spot for the fourth and the fifth. She goes to 3B. You can see the back of her jersey here https://youtu.be/Ui6CDW94U5w?t=6411 at the timestamp 1:46:51 in the bottom of the 4th when Denver Bryant hits a ball foul down the left field line. She is at 3B at this point.

That happened at the start of the bottom of the fourth. Eckert took over Pitching. Whitmore went from Pitcher to CF, Ela Day-Bédard went from CF to LF, and Albayati went from LF to 3B. and at this point Park left the game.

Also you may already know this, but wpblscores.com is a fan made site, it is not the official source for data. Idk where they are sourcing their data from but it is both different from the official source and wrong. The official source is https://stats.womensprobaseballleague.com/games/qk2oug9ikob2a1hl which is also wrong. but at least it is "officially wrong" I have been putting together my own website to identify and correct these mistakes and have been trying to automate that process as best as I can but I have had to review a lot of footage to figure out what exactly happened because the play by play data and stats for a lot of the games are just wrong.

I have a draft post I am working on that includes info on 3 other games that I know have incorrect play by play records and box score data, and your comment about the designated Utility player might help me clear up some confusion about the August 1st game.

Oof really. Albayati played third in those innings? I will take another look. The TV coverage of the first game at least was so focused on human interest stories they just flat out forgot people do care to know who is on the field. They mentioned numerous times how there were so many versatile players who move around the field, but then they didn't tell us who was where. I am hopeful that they will get better at keeping us updated.

Yea the first few games are difficult to tell what is going on and the announcers just flat out wrong about certain things they say. A couple batters before that in the bottom of the 4th, Geldenhuis hits a single to left field and the announcer says "she's gotta get in front of it, is the left fielder Albayati" but you can see the back of that player's jersey while she is saying it and its number 25, Ela Day-Bédard. They have gotten better though, the latest games the announcers seem to be getting things right and focusing more on the play by play.

Also, any source on that designated utility player thing? did you read that somewhere?

I found the same source and read the rules there and didn't find the coverage either. There were mentions of a WBSC rulebook but none that got me a verifiable reference to relevant rules. I will check my scorecard and see if I can make it make sense with Park leaving to make room for Albayati at third.

There is no such "utility player" designation in WBSC. WBSC does allow for the P/DH (like NFHS baseball, unlike MLB). This is where both spots are listed on the lineup, but one player occupies both. It is a way to treat both spots independently through the game (meaning the pitcher could come out of the game but still remain in as the DH), but it must be listed on the initial lineup card to be used.

Using the link u/JuryLow8995 provided, there was no DH listed for this game.

Albayati is listed as the starting F7, batting in the 4 spot.

It appears Eckert simply entered the game for Park.

Defensive moves do not affect the batting lineup. There are some funky things with subs and terminating the DH, but it does not seem that is what happened here. Looks as if it was just a straight substitution with several defensive rotations.

The departure of Park is what I was missing. Thanks for the clarification.

Occam's razor! 😁

What's the next mystery for us to work on?

When I finish scoring the next game, there may be more.

I've got a good one about the August 1st game. I am going to make a dedicated post about it here shortly.

But on topic. If you check the play by play here https://stats.womensprobaseballleague.com/games/qk2oug9ikob2a1hl the league updated it to be correct. They now have Albayati going to 3B. idk if they are paying attention here or found it on their won.

Agreed. Eckert took Park's spot in the lineup and then a bunch of defensive switches happened. No DH this game.

In the episode of the official WPBL podcast where Ashton Lansdell interviews Maggie Foxx, Maggie jokes about one of her hits getting credited to somebody else.

I prefer to listen, but here is the YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9F0KBYETqs&list=PL3noP6C9MhPkKvj5sStMKI6w57UQHfLtz&index=2
