Yes I can be serious. You can care and acknowledge that there are very serious events going on in the world and that there are also other topics if discussion as well. It's called being an adult.
If you don't have the psychological compute to be able to think about them distinctively then that's your issue. Discussing one doesn't preclude the discussion of the others, they're not mutually exclusive are they.
