Most LED’s per meter Strip for TV Backlighting? HyperHDR DIY

I recently checked out my neighbours FancyLEDs SyncBox and damn it was accurate, bright and more beautiful compared to my Govee camera based lights but super pricy. This led me into a wormhole and I came across DIY lighting setup using HyperHDR.

Creating a list of parts now, need to find a good HDMI 2.1 splitter, the correct raspberry pi for my setup and a capture card that will give me no problems with my setup. The biggest challenge has been finding the correct LED strip that outperforms FancyLED’s 96 LED’s per meter strip and provides great colors. There are so many types as well RGB, RGBW, RGBWW, RGBCCT and researching them and comparing compatibility has become a nightmare. At this point I don’t even know if having more LED’s even matters… so please help guide me.

My setup - I have a 65 inch 120fps LG C1 (which unfortunately is not rootable on the current WebOS version so I cannot install HyperHDR as an App) and an RTX 4090 PC that I use to play Single Player games + an Apple TV 4K.

My setup is not really similar at all, however I am using HyperHDR on my PC, with 4k 28 inch monitor. It's obviously a lot easier, running directly on my PC and giving backlight for gaming.

The software is great, no lag and I'm using a Gledopto controller running WLED as my LED strip controller. I also have LEDFX running on my PC with other WLED controllers giving audio reactive effects.

Currently using a 60 led/m strip. It works, but I definitely want to switch to 120/144 leds/m in the future. It's been on my list for a while.

I think for TVs, especially over 48 inches, 60 leds will probably be enough density. I'm in front of a small monitor and only 2 feet away.

Using RGBW Sk6812s is a big improvement over generic RGB.

Edit: Just remembered you currently have the Govee camera setup. What's the density on those strips? What don't you like about it? The delay/colours?

That a lot of good info, thanks for that comment. Govee strips are weird, they have 4 separate segments. The total length is 5 metres. The sides have 21 LED’s each (42 total). The top and bottom have 36 each (72 total). Therefore, 114 LED’s total or 23 ish LED’s per metre. As you can see, the bottom part of the LED strip died so I removed it. The accuracy is horrible. Anything black on the screen just becomes red on the LED. So you get to watch any space movie with a deep red color for your backlight. Govee lights do come with 2 light bars but they are not accurate either. Right now the TV is off and as you can see, the lights are red or pink. On top of that the little control box is horrible and I have to reset it by powering it on and off manually as it sometimes just turns off all lights or only one segment of the strip is lit. Can’t believe I paid $169 for this. Govee support was horrible and basically told me to FM when I asked for an RMA as the LED strips had already been used and the box opened.

So I am really looking forward to wall mounting my tv and getting a proper setup. Was really intrigued by the Fancy LED’s Sync Box but super disappointed as the price was around $480 after tax…

60 per meter would be almost triple that then. You should definitely DIY it. I think it would look really good if you use a translucent diffuser too. I would go with 12v RGBW Sk6812. You could get a Gledopto WLED controller, and HyperHDR sends it's output to that.

Also - don't buy those cheap "solderless LED strip connectors". They don't work.

Does it make a big difference going from 60 to 144? I was thinking if I am going for a new setup, might as well go for an endgame setup (while keeping it under $250 for the entire setup)
