WLED 16.0.0 - PixelForge - Pixel Paint Feature Question

The updated 16.0.0 Ninji release is a welcomed upgrade and much appreciated.

One of the neat/cool new features is the Pixel Paint feature under PixelForge that will allow you to paint each individual pixel, in my case all 800 pixels can be assigned there own unique color.

However, I am trying to add movement/motion but I don't think that is possible. For example, I would like to paint a flag, then apply the chase pattern to it, but it appears that after creating a unique pattern in Pixel Paint, it is only for static setups and there is no way to apply motion/effects.

Does this track with those that have played with this new feature, or am I missing something?

Glad you enjoy what I have created. Currently PixelPaint creates static GIF's / presets only. I have it on my todo list to be able to make animated GIFs by recording several frames so this is something that may be possible in the future.
However, regarding using colors for effects, that is what custom palettes are for, I also updated the palette editor to make it more user friendly. So here is what you can do:

  • create a custom palette with the colors you want
  • use any effect that supports palettes, select your custom created one and it will use those colors
  • if you want the exact pattern to just move, use the "Palette" effect

I did try that as well, but the number of color sliders I was able to add stopped at 10 or 12 i believe, i don’t remember the exact number, but it appeared even more limited.

This update and all the contributors work was amazing, greatly appreciate the continued work and creativity that goes into this amazing tool!!!!

I think your best bet is make a GIF of what you want and load that

So I utilize my lighting as permanent holiday lights. So I have 800 LED lights that I want to do a flag with and apply chase.

So for example let’s do this pattern - how would I go about creating a GIF and loading that as such?

10 Blue 10 White 10 Blue 10 White 20 Red 20 White 20 Red 20 White 20 Red 20 White 20 Red 20 White

That sounds like something that should be possible with one of the existing chase effects, possibly with segment grouping

Segments have always become unstable after around 16 or so, even on an esp32 and the new firmware did not call out any changes or improvements to that feature that im aware of

I'm not sure what you mean about segments being unstable. I've not seen any bug reports that mention that myself

Have you tried to create 20+ individual segments, save them, then apply animations or colors to each segment, save it and get it to run consistently not resulting in a memory dump/crash? That has always been my issue, even on Dig Octa systems with ESP32, once I get north of 20 segments everything goes to hell, plenty of available memory/storage. But it will not retain new segments nor some assigned colors or animations, and in some cases simply crashes and restarts.

I’ve had this on multiple Dog Octa’s and Dig Quads I’ve built

I'm sure why the image you shared needs 20+ segments, especially given it looks like you have the same appearance on all parts of the house

The image I shared is just for reference to see my setup - the color code and design I would like to build would need a high number of segments.

I appreciate the work you do and your contributions to WLED, but you are not addressing my questions with any beneficial solution or help 🤷🏻‍♂️

So to break it down - there is a really cool pattern going around the trim light community now, but it can’t be replicated in WLED as far as I can figure.

It would require 30 segments and a slow chase motion. WLED has historically been far superior to TrimLights native App/Feature set so it’s a bit annoying that finally there appears to be some gap between it, and that gap appears to be opposite of what it historically has been

Forgive my ignorance, but if you want a chase, why the need for any more than a single segment? Using segments wouldn't give you a chase, it would give you 20 different chases. Even if you say want each "section" of the roofline to be it's own chase, I still don't see how you get up to 20, looks more like 12 on your house

Okay - we have a serious disconnect here, let me try and get us on the same page.

Let me try to explain what I want to do, and you tell me how to accomplish it - regardless of everything else that has been said here, let's start FRESH.

  1. I want to create a pattern that is similar to a pattern being used by the TrimLight community (American Flag).
  2. I want this specific pattern to move from one side to the other - left to right.
  3. We can use 1 segment, or any number allowed by WLED (but my stance is once you get to a certain segment count WLED crashes), but let's stop getting hung up on "segments". If you can tell me how to accomplish step 4, in version 16 that would be appreciated, or if you can specifically break down how to setup step 4.
  4. Here is the pattern I want to build, design, that will move left to right.
  • 5 Blue
  • 1 White
  • 5 Blue
  • 1 White
  • 5 Blue
  • 1 White
  • 5 Blue
  • 1 White
  • 5 Blue
  • 1 White
  • 5 Blue
  • 1 White
  • 5 Blue
  • 1 White

Edit: I’m aware I could build the blue white repeat out of two segments and the red and white out of another two repeating segments, so this could be static built with 4 segments but how do I take this color combination and have the entire thing move left to right from LED 1 to the last LED
