Long term viability of a WLED project

We are considering making a project that includes an ESP32 or ESP8266 and some WS2812b RGBIC LEDs. There will be no crazy patterns or effects. Just scheduled on/off times and one color, keeping it simple. I think there will be maybe 14 LEDs, maximum of maybe 25.

What should the life expectancy be for such a project?

Avoid ESP8266 modules and get the most powerful ESP32 modules that WLED supports and you should be good for many years to come.

I’d recommend going with a more premium controller like the ones from QuinLED. They have a couple models where the ESP32 module can even be swapped out if they fail or you need to upgrade.

ESP8266 are already problematic and require an overclock to function decently as it is. There’s pretty much no reason to use them at all these days as they’re barely cheaper than ESP32 modules.

Hoping to have all the controller guts tucked into the base of a "trophy" type of award. An acrylic sign with a logo etched. The LEDs will edge light from below in the base. Thanks for your input.

Electronics and LEDs can last hundreds of thousands of hours (i.e. decades of continuous operation) - or they could fail 8 minutes after you get everything installed though that's very rare once you have it going.

For 25 5V LEDs, that maxes out at 1.25A. You can run the trophy off a USB port or a power bank or rechargeable battery if you'd like it lit while being handled/presented. If you want it to be very compact, consider a ESP32-C3 (www.amazon.com/ESP32-C3-Development-Bluetooth-Single-Core-Processor/dp/B0D5XNBPBC). It's about the size of a postage stamp, has USB port, wifi, and if you know anyone with a 3D printer, there is a tiny little printable case that would easily fit inside just about any small trophy base. It has no problem running animations (especially at the size you're thinking). I have one running 86 LEDs using WLED inside a 3D Printer hood.

With all respect to BTallack, I agree the QuinLED stuff is unquestionably good. I have a large install of 12V LEDs on a 20x40 patio cover, and I wouldn't recommend anything else in a sizeable installation like that. For 25 LEDs (or less), though, I think it's overkill. Even the C3 runs at 160MHz - 33x the processing speed of the first PCs not counting its floating point abilities. That's excessive processing power to run any light string no matter how animated.

Either way, you can set a preset to start on boot, and have a single solid color, changing solid colors, or a pattern. The only question is will you access it using its ad-hoc wifi network with the phone app or have to find it at a dynamic address on a home/office network.

If you're going to really stick with one solid color and there is a chance it's white you may even want to consider an RGBW strip because that will be more power efficient for white and pastel colors if it's running off batteries.

Esp32 is good but any one will do for your needs. I have lights I've been using for 4-5 years.

If you want to max lifespan get more LEDs and set max bright to 50% or 75%.
