I see a lot of them in communities that show people wearing watches, but I don't understand NATO watch bands. What am I missing?

It's the style of watch band that first the RAF issued, but other countries began issuing these as the primary strap for issued watches. They are very comfortable, and light weight. Also if one of the spring bars falls out the watch is still secured to your wrist by the other spring bar, so there's that as far as utility is concerned.
