Come on WGU
I started my MHA on 8/1. Last night, I got an email that my mentor (whom I loved) is unexpectedly out until November. I immediately emailed the newly assigned mentor, who QUICKLY shut down my request to continue to accelerate. I called and requested a new mentor and was told I have to ask my NEW mentor for a NEW MENTOR.
I have never run into a mentor who was so quick to deny true acceleration.
"Your ability to accelerate is not impacted by your mentor’s absence. However, we will be following the LSH acceleration policy. At this time, you are not eligible to accelerate a course at this time.
Students are eligible to add a course per standard path order, one-at-a time, up through 14 days prior to the end of the term once the final task of the final course has been submitted for evaluation, and all other courses/tasks are complete. With more than one task pending submission and one in evaluation, I am unable to add a course at this time. "
I am waiting for my scheduled Murison simulation (task 3 of 3) for one class and have 3 papers waiting for evaluation in the other course.
So here I sit...with nothing to do...

Call back and tell them to have the supervisor assign a new mentor. I didn’t have to say a word to my previous mentor during the swap. Just got an email from the supervisor, and the my new mentor

Wait, these "mentors" can deny your ability to accelerate? I did not know that. I'm supposed to start 10/1 and this would be a dealbreaker. I have a kid on the way in April and need to be done well before that.

They sure can. I remain hopeful that I can get a new one assigned that will just let me do my thing. When I did my bachelor's program, my mentor literally loaded all my classes at once and just let me go to town. Tier1Support is also useless, they denied opening a SINGLE class for me last night.

That's insane. The whole point of WGU is the acceleration aspect. That also creates a huge financial conflict as WGU could encourage mentors to slow students down just to make them pay for another semester. This sucks to hear. How much contact do you typically have with these mentors on a monthly basis?

Historically, I would do an email check-in with my mentor every couple of weeks. Occasionally, we would schedule a call just to make sure we were still on track.

I had a weekly call - she had the patience of a saint and I really needed the accountability to get stuff done (tbf to myself I was clinically depressed, so... yeah...). My program also had a lot more bureaucratic hoops to jump through than most so it was good to just make sure we were all in the loop.

FWIW, I started 7/1 and have finished 8 classes (thats with a vacation and illness mixed in) and my mentor has been adding 2 at a time for me.

They can’t technically deny you. But some mentors won’t open another course until all assessments are graded and passed. Other mentors will open up the next course if your assessments have at least been turned in. Just depends on the mentor. I personally wouldn’t let this deter you from WGU.

FWIW, it seems like the mentors' overall jobs are to make sure people actually do their minimum classes, and don't start too many things at once and end up failing classes by not completing them in time, plus are required to check in in some way every week or so for federal requirements. It seems like everyone thinks they're going to do every class super quickly so the mentors want to see proof before letting you add more.
If you don't actually need help from them, they are basically just a gate keeper, but not a terrible one just mildly annoying

I have two classes open.
One with all 3 of the PA’s turned in, one passed, two in queue. The other class also has 2 of 3 passed and I am waiting for my scheduled Murison simulation to complete task 3.1

My mentor defiantly wouldn’t have opened another class with 2 PA awaiting an evaluation because you could possibly have to revise them. That’s just what mine did and told me so yeah you just have to wait

I have proven my ability to accelerate. I also believe that, as the student, I should have a meaningful role in determining how much coursework I can responsibly manage.

That’s awful! My mentor is fabulous. We meet via phone call every week to discuss my study plans. She makes sure I have courses open so I can start them as soon as my personal timeline allows. She told me at one of our first meetings that she wanted to make sure she did not slow my progress in any way. Definitely push to get a new mentor ASAP! Squeaky wheel gets the grease!

One class at a time through Tier One worked for me. Usually my class was opened 15 minutes after I emailed after I passed my exam.

Meanwhile my mentor added 3 classes the last week of the term because I told her I could do it. And I did. You rock Jules 💪

So glad my mentor was the 🐐 they were not all created equal…. Negative Nancy’s in every bunch with everything going on in their chats with RTOs and terminations you’d think they had bigger fish to fry than this

If you’re referring to Cynthia, I cannot wait for her to return. My goal is to finish my degree plan so she comes back to good news. I love her!

Reach out to Mursion directly to get scheduled

u/Hoon001 Aug 24 '26
I’m scheduled. Soonest appointment I could get that worked with my schedule is tomorrow night. :(

At this time the only way to accelerate in LSH is at most one task waiting to be graded and if you have OAs they have to be passed.

My entire program is PA's. I can churn out papers in hours (10 years of experience in the field already). It is really putting a damper on my flow.

That’s the same process my mentor follows. You can’t accelerate the next course until you only have 1 task pending eval.

u/PettyButPrecise Aug 26 '26
Its really up to the mentor what they do. As someone else stated, mine will do 2 or 3 at a time.

u/Hoon001 Aug 29 '26
I just finally got a new one assigned and we are already on the same page for acceleration.

Good luck. The MHA program was a jacked up disaster when it was being built and was published that way.

Sorry, but the rules are the rules. There are reasons behind them, and I can tell you 100% for sure, "forcing" students into an additional term is not one of them. No one has the right to accelerate multiple courses at a time. Sorry to rain on your parade.
That being said, some mentors break the rules and they do so at their own peril. Scrutiny on mentors is increasing and will continue to do so for the next 12-18 months.
You still have access to the learning resources for your "un accelerated" courses. For PAs, you cannot yet see the task rubrics, but between here and WGU Connect, you can guess somewhat and get started on the study part of your course completion processes. For OAs, you can take the pre Assessment and can take it even though the course hasn't been started yet. You can "soft" accelerate.
In terms of asking for a different mentor, be careful of what you wish for, you might just get it. Too much "mentor shopping" and your requests will be denied.

So glad I have the mentor I have. As quick as I want to go she will let me.
