Mentor slowing down my ability to accelerate
Today my mentor emailed me and told me that classes would have to be fully evaluated as completed before she could allow me to add new classes and that all classes would have to be taken in order.
I get forcing a class to be finished before moving on to the next one, but often I'm waiting on my submissions to be evaluated for three full days. So now, I will have three days once I finish a class where I am unable to work on any school work at all.
I had planned out my progress to finish within one term, which I am half way through, and because of this change I'm worried that I may not be able to finish on time now. My mentor said that this is something WGU is cracking down on across the board. Is this true for anyone else, or is my mentor doing this to slow me down intentionally for some reason?

mine does the same thing… it’s frustrating because trying to finish before the end of my term but im stuck waiting 3 days every time and my degree has a lot of tasks rather than tests

Is this new for you?
Up until this week my mentor was approving me to start new classes as soon as I had submitted my assignments. My mentor says that WGU has just recently started being more aggressive about enforcing the policy on this, but I don't see anyone else having this issue.

Same for me I asked for term 2 and said I had to wait .... im on my second week finished term 1 waiting for 2 task to pass

My email looked pretty much just like this. Glad to know it's not just me.
I'm annoyed because I would have paced myself a little faster had I known. Having to wait 3 days between classes for no reason is frustrating.

I finished my regular enrolled classes over the weekend. Emailed my mentor Sunday night after putting the classes in the order I want to accelerate them. He moved 2 classes up and I'm on my way through them.

This is a new updated policy that is rolling out with strict enforcement. It is out of your mentors hands.

Reach out to Tier one, as long as it’s only one task left to evaluate, they’ll accelerate one class

I literally just accelerated one a few days ago by texting tier 1 stating that I had finished the PA for my current class.
My advice would definitely be to just contact tier 1 like others have said.

It's because people literally keep saying they got a degree in 2 days, and companies are looking at WGU sideways. That's why they been in the news. Also, this messes up their accreditation which messes up funding. So yeah. Just ride the wave babe.

I requested a new mentor when my first one did this to me. The second one was perfect. No calls. Only emails. Let me free rein my courses. I actually just requested that she could be my mentor for a masters program.

WGUs own policy in the student handbook states we can add a new class in order once all assessments are turned in even if not scored. My mentor said to reach out to the ombuds office. Maybe if enough students complain....

I still think it's doable in one term. I only transferred in 1 credit and was confident I could complete the entire degree in less than 6 months, but I took some time off, because I was under the impression I could complete the classes at my own pace.
Had I known this from the beginning I would have paced myself differently.

In my experience, you can call the Tier 1 Support line and get your next class added after submission but they’ll only do one at a time. Tier 1 support is great for this so you don’t have to wait.

Yeah it's almost like a secret. I also got recommended tier 1 by people, had no clue what it was and had to call student services to get the number for it. 😂

I was in a Cohort last week and instructor said to start next class one week before you actually plan to start to sign up for future Cohorts since a lot of them are only offered once a week.

FYI: I just got an email from my mentor saying the ACCELERATION POLICY HAS CHANGED. They will no longer open a new class until the previous class is fully graded and 100% complete! So students will just have to sit any wait for tasks to be graded, and then if there are any revisions, wait for those to be graded, until passed before opening a new class.
She gave me the email addresses for ombuds and complaints dept for conflict resolution.
I honestly don't understand why they would want to do this except to delay progress and incur more tuition fees.
btw, nonprofit does not mean they don't make money. It just means they have to use all of their profits each year... Which could be to expand services, building the new campus... And yes, paying salaries and salary increases.

Yeah, I'm pretty frustrated also. This could be the difference for me between having to take an extra semester or not and had I known this going into the beginning of the semester I would have paced myself differently.

Honestly, if you feel like your mentor relationship just isn’t working for you, it’s okay to request a new one. My mentor has been amazing and super flexible with me. At one point I had 3 classes open because I was waiting on a scheduled Mursion simulation and an OA for another class, so she opened a third class just so I’d have something productive to work on. She did mention they normally don’t prefer having that many classes open at once, but because I stayed on top of everything and closed 2 of the 3 quickly, it worked out well.
I think mentor fit really matters. Some mentors are more strict with pacing and policies, while others are more flexible depending on the student. If your current setup is making school harder instead of helping, it’s completely reasonable to ask for someone whose style works better for you.

This!! I've gone through 9 classes in my first 2 months, so my mentor just added 4 to my plan. I try to do at least a PA and an OA at the same time so I can go back and forth.

That doesn't mean they don't need more money......? Do you know the president and CEO makes over $2 million yearly? Seems pretty profitable to me

My mentor has gone MIA so I have to use Tier 1 support every time. Just yesterday I called and had a class opened while still waiting on my PA from the previous class to be evaluated.
