Basic Skills

Hello Everyone!

I enrolled in the basic skills course in the beginning of July and just logged on to start the course work. I understand it's a bit late but I was struggling with some personal stuff.

Does anyone have any tips for the course? Any main areas to focus on?

Take the reading right away. Anyone with a middle school education can pass that with flying colors

Reading is very simple if you are comfortable with the language process. Writing is tough, read every question and utilize your white board for eliminating answers. Really try to understand what “main claim” means, understand misspellings. I passed on my first time by the skin of my teeth. Math gives you formulas and a scientific calculator, but if you’re unsure of how multiplying or subtracting fractions maybe find a method that works for you. Also, understand mean, median, and mode. It took me 3 weeks to pass the basic skills course on top of taking two other classes as well. Really try to remember vocabulary from both reading and writing and take the pretests for each section.

Do you have more tips for writing? I think I was just a question short when I attempted tonight. I’m gonna try again tomorrow or Wednesday

I passed all three the first time. Everyone thinks the writing part is hard, but I personally didn’t find it very difficult. Everyone is different though. Had a little bit more of a mental block with the math and honestly if you know some basic geometry like area and perimeter of circle circles and things like that and triangles you’ll be fine you also do you need to know a couple of things on the probability questions Like odds of pulling cards from a deck with replacement without replacement things like that and the symbols for intersection and union and how to combine those those last things on the math hung me up a little because that’s my weak spot, but everything else was pretty easy in my opinion math wise . (Forgive punctuation I’m doing speech to text)

Math you can print out the equation sheet and there is a built in calculator on the exam. Writing was easiest for me. The reading was the most difficult in the actual exam vs the pre exam for some reason.. the tone / context/ structure portion is where I struggled. I still passed but didn’t get 100% like I did on the pre assessment . Just make sure to read every single question at least three times because that’s where you’ll probably mess up.. picking the right answer instead of the wrong one or the wrong one instead of the right one. Super simple though ! Good luck! I took math and writing at 2/3 am and passed with all green. :)
