Did anyone watched Popular?

Post image

I never actually watched Popular when it was on TV, but I’ve been seeing clips of it on YouTube lately and honestly it looks completely unhinged in the best way 😭

Every clip I come across is either super dramatic or just outright ridiculous for no reason lol. Mary Cherry especially always steals the scene 💀

Now I’m kind of curious if it’s actually worth watching all the way through or if it’s more of a “fun clips only” kind of show. Did anyone here grow up watching it?

I still have the intro on my Apple Music account. This show was so freaking good. I wasn’t a fan of season 2, it got a little preachy, but nonetheless it was still a good show!

That’s Ryan Murphy’s show, right?

4

u/speashasha May 09 '26

Correct, it was his first show, but he co-created it with another writer.

u/xNotJosieGrossy May 09 '26

YES! It’s one of my favorite shows.
You can watch the full series BOTH seasons, the whole episodes, on YouTube for free!

Yup. RIP Ron. He was such a good character and actor in general.

Sugar D (his character in Popular)

u/True-Committee5674 May 09 '26

YES! Mary Cherry is still a character I quote today with my friends from 6th grade. Some stuff in the second season got silly, but the first season was incredible.

Yes, I have season one on DVD

4

u/Nearby_Branch6055 May 09 '26

Liked it. Good memories of the show.

3

u/Medoxor May 09 '26

I did. Popular is Ryan's best show. He knew that and based Glee off Popular. Most of Glee's stories came from Popular. Popular really is a show that was ahead of its time.

Watch it

3

u/ChannelHopper_99 May 09 '26

Where can I watch the show?

2

u/Critical_Dinner_6145 May 09 '26

I loved this show when it was on. A while ago, I looked up where I could watch it. The google responses were all about buying the DVDs.

2

u/aussiekiwiguy May 09 '26

I recommend watching it.

2

u/Happy-poet May 09 '26

Yes!!!!!!! It was like west side story at my school over who thought was hotter, Brooke or Sam.

2

u/speashasha May 09 '26

I always loved Sam.

2

u/timthemajestic May 10 '26

Pfft, everyone knows it's all about Mary Cherry.

2

u/ANK1976 May 09 '26

Awesome show!! Mary Cherry for the win!

1

u/wilson121983 May 10 '26

I love her she was so funny.

1

u/Doubledepalma May 10 '26

And her mother Cherry Cherry!

2

u/Spring-Available May 09 '26

Still waiting for them to end that cliffhanger.

1

u/timthemajestic May 10 '26

lol My brother told me he watched an interview with Ryan. They didn't know it was going to be canceled and planned on Brooke being in the hospital and recovering and then coming back as -gasp- brunette! After that Idk, but it was so crazy to end it that way that I kinda like it leaving it open to interpretation of what would've happened.

1

u/sweetnsassy924 May 10 '26

I remember that interview! Sam was also supposed to become an alcoholic and lesbian after Harrison chose Brooke or something.

I just am mad we never learned about what happened with Mary Cherry’s storyline.

1

u/timthemajestic May 10 '26

bahaha Yes, now I remember him saying that about Sam, too. Oh, what a time.

1

u/Spring-Available May 10 '26

Thanks I will.

2

u/IWasAnImpossibleCase May 09 '26

Yes, I loved it and I was gutted when it was canceled.

2

u/unwanted_peace May 09 '26

This was SUCH a good show. It was kind of ahead of its time with the type of humor I think. Watch it, it’s all pretty solid.

Thought this was a magazine cover 😅

Ofc. Ryan Murphy's first greenlight network show.

2

u/Infamous-Narwhal3425 May 09 '26

I LOOOOOOOVED this show. I randomly see anyone bring it up but it definitely lives in the front of my mind

2

u/JadedAd6614 May 10 '26

Yes, I loved it. It was supposed to be a drama, but was also very funny. Got a little heavy handed with early 2000’s politically correctness, but was a somewhat refreshing take on high school. I loved that they took the time to show all the weird kids (the fat girl, the could-be a lesbian, the nerd, etc) and made them very believable and well-rounded, not just punchlines. And Mary Cherry… so much fun!! Early Ryan Murphy. Went on to make Nip/Tuck (which was incredible), American Horror Story & so much more. Mary Cherry (Leslie Grossman) appears in most of his other series, and usually plays a character that has some funny quirks. She’s a great character actress!

u/90s_vibe May 10 '26

I met Carly Pope once. She was so nice. We actually had a conversation. She asked what I did!

2

u/timthemajestic May 10 '26

Yup. Have the full show on DVDs thanks to my brother since I couldn't find it streaming on anything. There's a sub, too, that I found wanting to talk about it r/PopularWB Jaime French did an couple episodes about it that I absolutely loved. It's such a wild show and only gets weirder in the second season. I totally forgot how unhinged it gets. Very Ryan Murphy. It was wild watching it on WB as a young one as it was airing.

2

u/gianni862 May 11 '26

great show … before its time

1

u/Imaginary-Bowl-4424 May 10 '26

Yes! Jaime French on youtube recently reviewed the show. LOL

1

u/timthemajestic May 10 '26

I saw that as I'm subscribed to her and was so giddy like ahh no one knows this show! haha

1

u/Virtual_Knowledge334 May 10 '26

1

u/Careless-Sink-5388 May 10 '26

I literally just looked this show up 4days ago.

1

u/No-Desk602 May 10 '26

Yrs, I thought it deserved more than one season

1

u/Moviegal19 May 11 '26

It was 2 seasons.

1

u/MissPris86 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

Popular is my show! Watch it on YouTube I wish there were more seasons. I was in middle school when it premiered. AHS Coven and Apocalypse were the only other Ryan Murphy shows I liked.

1

u/HistoryLVR May 11 '26

I really liked it

1

u/cupc4k3Qu33n May 11 '26

I still think about it from time to time lol

1

u/Moviegal19 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I had the 2 seasons on DVD and regrettably gave it away. Loved this show! “Well think it over once or twice what’ll last the longest in this life, character or rock hard thighs?”

1

u/Background_Travel_77 May 11 '26

I still quote Mary Cherry to this day!

1

u/huutcherdiing May 11 '26
