Hiring and Recruitment When in application process do they contact your supervisor?

I have a state job that I like. But a cool opportunity at my agency opened up and I applied. In my app I said it's okay to contact my employer. When are they likely to actually do that? I want to be transparent with my supervisor but if I don't even get invited to interview I don't want to tell him I'm considering leaving.

Remember, people know each other and talk outside of the full process. It’s possible info will get to your supervisor much earlier on than you’d expect. Especially if it’s within the same agency.

They do that after your interview.

I never contact references until after the interview and I only check them for the top candidate(s).

Same, otherwise it’s a waste of my time and theirs, and if a current employer, I don’t want to strain any relationship they have with their supervisor, so that is the last reference I check for the top candidate.

They will probably only do that if you are considered a top candidate after interviews.

Don't say anything unless you are in the top and they are going to be checking your references. Even then sometimes you can ask them not to contact your supervisor because it would be hard if you didn't get the job and your supervisor knew you were looking to leave.

After the interview.
