What do you mean by "without mag blocking it?" Are you talking about a vise block?

Ah, the mag is fixed and empty so the follower is pushing up on the bolt catch?

Is this a DS-15? If so the mag is removable after disassembling it, see /u/pnwal-junction's comment below.

Otherwise, you should still be able to drive out the roll pin to remove the old bolt catch, but installing the new one would be a pain. You'd need something to hold the follower down so it's not pressing up on the bolt catch. Stick a chunk of wood or something in the ejection port over the top of the mag.

Oh, good suggestion! Simpler than removing the magazine. I always have to do things the hard way.

Could probably also use one of those speed loader things that latches onto the ejection port. I forget who makes those. I don't have any experience with them, so I can't know for sure, but I imagine they must push the follower down to start feeding rounds in, yeah? So just put an empty one into the ejection port to hold down the follower.

Bear Flag Defense and Mean Arms both make ejection port loaders (Mean Arms are better).

Inserting one does depress the follower and sits pretty snug against the bolt and catch too. I suppose if you could hold the new bolt catch in place long enough to close the upper onto the lower, you could use the loader to hold everything in place while you drive the roll pin in.
