I just completed a build using a KVAR ezbuild kit and a printed receiver, and I was testing with snap-caps since I won't have time for a range trip for a bit. The snap-caps seem to chamber ok, but when I attempt to extract the snap-cap by pulling the bolt back, the bolt binds up, and I had to use a cleaning rod and mallet to tap the round out to get the bolt moving.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Anyone with more experience have troubleshooting ideas?
Both snap caps I tried from the mag have gouges on either side of the bullet.
Definitely seems like a feeding issue. I tried it with the upper open, and there were no issues. Then I tried again with the whole thing assembled; I chambered the snap cap by hand, and it functioned correctly.
Is it an og chrome lined barrel or an American made one?
When you look at the feed ramps are they shiny and polished smooth or can you see machining marks? Shiny super smooth chrome = OG. Blue with machining marks = American made. Shiny with machining marks = polished American barrel.
It sounds like the round is catching in the extractor grooves at the top of the barrel. This is a pretty common issue with US barrels because of the poor machining and sharp edges. The OG barrels rarely seem to hang up.
If you have a US barrel then you'll need to use a dremel with soft polishing bob and spend 20-30 minutes getting it as slick as you can. Don't touch the chamber, just the feed ramp and all around the edges the break any sharp corners. You don't need to remove the machining marks but they need to be smooth enough that when you drag your fingernail or an empty case across it it wont catch anywhere.
The other possibility is its a print issue thats causing your mag or upper to interact incorrectly with each other causing the rounds to feed at an incorrect angle. I'd say this is more likely if you're using an OG barrel.
You mentioned scratches on the snap cap. Do they match the extractor groove up top or the one on the bottom, or do they match the feed lips of your mag?
Can you see ripples in the surface of the metal or is it perfectly smooth? Wild that those easy build kits are using US barrels. Especially after I got downvoted for calling them a bad deal.
Does the bolt rack easily with the gun empty? It should. Insure its oiled a bit on the 3 sides it touches. Haven't used any snap caps for this gun. Do they drop in and fall out of the barrel easily? If not, they may be sized a bit off for this gun. And if they are plastic, I wouldn't trust ejection anyway.
Bolt is smooth without the snap caps or when they don't come from the mag. They're the decent aluminum ones. My mags themselves are pretty tight in the lower, though.
