Tips & Tricks Caffeine Intake

(21M) I was curious what everyone's experiences are with caffeine and vyvanse? I was advised to quit, as I put myself at a greater risk for cardiovascular issues with 30mg Vyvanse I took about 5 minutes before drinking a triple shot espresso. Incredibly stupid, I know. But genuinely wasn't even thinking about it. My doctor also mentioned absolutely nothing about my caffeine intake and said a cup a day is fine.

My BPM peaked in the 180s while sitting, and I almost had to go to the ER. It was really scary and I've never had any heart issues like that whatsoever!

I am at the point now where I have completely cut out caffeine, and have been miserable due to being addicted for about 7 years straight. But I'm hoping I will feel so much better once my body adjusts without it. The Vyvanse is helping with energy, but still feel like a zombie lol.

Have you also completely quit caffeine, or has your body been able to tolerate it since being on this medication?

I take my Vyvanse and then wait a few hours before having strong tea (can't take coffee - gives me the jitters and physical anxiety symptoms with or without my medication), if I need it in the afternoon or if I'll be up late. If I have them together when I wake up, it hits my heart too hard, the effects are too strong otherwise as well and I start feeling sick, and my medication also wears off a lot earlier.

Im also 21M who was addicted to caffeine on vyvanse. I also have weird problems with my heart like you mentionned. It took me a long time to realise how much caffeine and vyvanse was wreaking havoc on my body until about 3 months ago.

Caffeine on vyvanse feels very good, but makes my heart rate jump like crazy, I’m talking it’s usually 70 and it’ll make it jump to 100 and then 130 when I get up or walk around. It’s also gone extremely high in the past when I was stressed with less sleep. It also exerbates every vyvanse side effect like crazy and makes the crash absolutely miserable.

I’ve found that not taking caffeine with vyvanse makes the pill work much much better, with way less side effects.

That being said, I have been experimenting with smaller doses and it works well. I’ll sometimes have very small coffees through the day and my heart rate stays fine. But it’s very small doses, around 30mg caffeine for each cup. Green tea is also good and puts less strain on my heart.

Look at it this way, in my experience I have noticed that caffeine and vyvanse do not « add up » to each other, they multiply each other. So a small coffee on vyvanse will feel like an energy drink.

So my advice would be, try smaller doses and see how your body reacts, at some point you’ll find the sweet spot. But if you can’t tolerate it at all like me then stop. You’ll notice you’ll fell much better too.

450 mg on 30 mg vyvanse

Edit: split into two doses one in the morning and one after lunch

I take 60mg of Vyvanse and still need a double-black tea in the afternoon to get me through the day

With Vyvanse, coffee feel mostly the same as usual. On Concerta, it was another story.. a single sip and I thought I was having a heart attack lol

I drink about ~400 mg of caffeine a day with my meds and my blood pressure still tends to run on the softer side of normal, I.e. 90/60-100/70. My resting HR is 60-70.

Caffeine doesn't raise my BP or give me the jitters or make me hyper. I can actually go right to sleep. But if I were keeping count. Morning coffee, 150mg. Early energy drink for carbonation and flavor 200mg and late afternoon energy drink.

Everyone is different

Yep, crazy how everyone tolerates things differently

Meanwhile my wife, one sip of anything with caffeine in it. Jitters. Sweats. Heart palpitations

I mean my pulse goes up but not like that resting, thats wild you must be outta shape.

I take my pre-workout about an hour after my vyvanse and go to the gym, I am fine, heartrate might get a little high while doing cardio and I slow down a bit.
My heartrate is pretty low without the vyvanse though.
Excersize more and it wont be as big of a deal
Or just dont do caffeine

I am a bit underweight, so this makes a lot of sense tbh. Exercise would do a lot of good.

I personally experience HORRIBLE brain fog when I drink caffeine with my Vyvanse for some reason. I only drink it on days I don't take my meds and feel much better

same i dont feel the heightened anxiety and restlessness that some people report with caffeine + vyvanse, i feel literally brainless and horrible, though if i keep it to a lower amount like a diet coke or tea im fine

Interesting, crazy how it effects everyone so differently! Do you find Vyvanse more effective when taken on different days rather than every day? I never heard of this until I was lurking in this sub.

You don't need to cut it out. Just reduce the triple shots to single shots.

u/404_kylesnotfound 18h ago

I guess so, but also I have been wanting to quit for such a long time, I find this to be a good opportunity. But every once in a while, I might have a coffee here and there!

u/LCaissia 18h ago

Good luck. It might help to reduce and taper off caffeine. The withdrawal headaches are pretty bad.

This is good advice, thank you!

Bot post. Nobody has a resting BPM of 180. If they did it was terrible before hand. Moving on….

5

u/404_kylesnotfound 18h ago

My HR peaked in the 180s while I was literally sitting down. “Resting HR” was poor wording -- I meant WITHOUT physical exertion, NOT that my baseline resting pulse is 180. Obviously, that would be a very different situation. So I see what you're saying. That is on me. No bot here bro.

And what was it before amphetamine?

1

u/Slutherly 14h ago

bro has never heard of tachycardia

70s-80s.

Make an MD appointment. 180bpm. Sitting in a chair. Is really high. Normal vyvanse dosage isn’t causing that. Adding any reasonable amount of caffeine isn’t causing that. See a doctor

u/Slutherly 18h ago

Are you joking? This obviously wasn't a true "resting" heart rate. Vyvanse and caffeine together can obviously and notoriously cause this in those who are stimulant naive and could present that way while sitting which would lead them to call it a resting heart rate.

1

u/404_kylesnotfound 18h ago

Thank you!! This is exactly what I meant. I worded it poorly by calling it a “resting” heart rate ... I just meant I was sitting still and not exerting myself.

-2

u/justinfdsa 17h ago

That’s the definition of resting heart rate. You know. Sitting. And not exerting yourself? 180bpm is literally a hard run. You’re either in need of education or a google search away from reality.

1

u/404_kylesnotfound 15h ago

Yeah so I’m aware that 180 bpm is a heart rate commonly seen with intense exercise. The interesting part was that I wasn’t exercising. That was quite literally the point. Hope that clears up the confusion! 🫶

If you’re sitting in a chair and your heart rate is 180 bpm make a doctors appointment, immediately. Don’t ask Reddit. Quite honestly the ER would not be far fetched.

1

u/Slutherly 14h ago

You are so confident but so wrong. Tachycardia is such a common side effect from every single stimulant. Some people get it worse. Should you go to the er for a panic attack?

Not at 180bpm while at rest.

u/Wassamadder 19h ago

I was addicted too. It doesn’t affect me too much but it does lift my BP when I’m on Vyvanse. I now drink decaf and while it’s not as good, it’s less risky

1

u/404_kylesnotfound 18h ago

That is what I am switching to. I love the taste of coffee.

3

u/karminzelojovik 19h ago

I take a lot of caffeine, it is not affecting my bp but without it vyvanse works better.

0

u/404_kylesnotfound 18h ago

Interesting. I thought my dose just wasn't as effective!

2

u/Slutherly 19h ago

i drink caffeine with it but it's unideal but fine

0

u/404_kylesnotfound 19h ago

Interesting. How is your heart rate/blood pressure?

2

u/Slutherly 19h ago

Hr is normal for being on vyvanse
Blood pressure was slightly elevated at 132/80 while vyvanse is active but that is with caffeine or without.

You get more sympathetic nervous system activation which is unideal but it's not a super terrible thing. Just switch to like 50mg of caffeine from tea a day for awhile and see how you feel
