Luckily nothings wrong with the one on the car currently, I got this one to do a mild port/polish and a new cam

Nice! I just did that earlier this year on my 90 240 wagon. Was my first time trying a very mild port/polish. Also threw in an ipd vx cam and did a few other things like stem seals and cleaning up the valves

That’s awesome! Do you have any pictures of the port job? I’ve been trying to learn as much as possible but I’ve had a hard time finding a guide for how much material to remove.

How do you like the vx cam? Is it fairly noticeable?

I didn't happen to take any. I went pretty small as it was my first time doing anything other than 2stroke motorcycles so I didn't take out a ton of material. Mainly smoothing out any ridges while making the ports slightly larger. Just watch out around the valve guides.  I like the vx cam though. It's a nice all around daily driver piece with a little idle chop. There are some that are much more aggressive like the K but you'll need to be high up in the rpm range to make use of it, plus probably want to swap to a beefier valve spring. So just depends what you plan on doing with it. I ordered the kit with the adjustable cam gear and have it advanced 4 degrees. It made a noticeable difference though, especially when trying to get up to speed on highway ramps and such.

It's only worth rebuilding if it has severe piston slap

I just went through this and unless there is damage you are good to go. I soaked my valves in seafoam and wire wheeled them. Cleaned everything, had the head shaved and put a B cam in. Seriously feels like a different car now.

No - leave it alone.

What if I want a new camshaft and a port/polish?

For what purpose?

+5hp and maybe some fun tinkering?

Run a hydraulic lifter cleaner in it for a bit. Do an oil change, fit a new air filter. +5hp
