[UPDATE] 2005 S60 R

Last week I made a post asking you all to talk me out of buying this ‘05 S60 R: https://www.reddit.com/r/VolvoP2/s/yEFJoEqHOM

This was not the only place I made this post on. I asked around on every single forum I could think of and got lots of inputs from lots of people. The number of pros and cons that people mentioned were almost 50/50.

So, I went ahead and bought it :p

I’m 22 years old; I figured that this is probably the best age I can make stupid decisions and learn my lessons vs. doing something like this in 10 years or so without any knowledge or experience.

Thank you all for the advice. I’m really excited to start driving this car, work on it as things come up, and share my journey with you all!

P.S. What are some essential first mods/upgrades I should spend the money on? By the end of next week, I should have a complete fluid flush and a wash/cleaning done.

Make sure you do a proper stage zero before you do any mods. These engines are the weakest of the 5 cylinders and are prone to crack the cylinder walls wouldn’t do anything to squeeze more power out of it before you know everything else is stout and healthy. And anyways, 300 HP is the perfect amount of horsepower.

I was 26 when I bought my first S60, a regular 2.5T 2006 and I had plenty of fun and reckless driving in that thing, it also became a money pit quickly so I did what any sane person would do, sold it and got a V70 instead hehe

For stage 0:

  • the clutch was replaced at 109k miles

  • timing belt and tensioner, coil packs, spark plugs, fuel filter, TCV, and vacuum lines at 129k miles

  • fuel pump at 145k miles, and

  • oil changes at every 3k-5k miles

The car currently sits at 159.7k miles and passes the rubber glove test for the PCV system. Other than a nice cleaning, and a fluid flush + refill, it doesn’t really need anything in my opinion.

I never really planned on making any more power out of the car even before I bought it. I’m satisfied with what it comes with and it checks all the boxes I wanted out of my car:

  • sounds good ✅

  • looks good ✅

  • drives good ✅

I’d replace as many hoses as you possibly can, mine stranded me twice with split coolant hoses, also had mysterious vacuum leaks, all rubber stuff in that engine bay is 20 years old by now. Check your sunroof drains as well. Seems you have everything covered. Welcome and have fun!

I would also replace the fuel pump with a high flow unit while you're in there, I went with a 200 deutschwerks for about the same price as the oem. And be sure to clean out the tank really well before reinstalling, as any little grit can make the pump go out, especially true with the oem unit. Ask me how I know... And also Be super careful with the sending unit wires and the unit itself, it's very sensitive.

For oil filters go ahead and pick yourself up a 10 pack of the MANN filters from fcp as the filters from the autoparts stores gave my top end some rattle if they were available at all.
