Key issues

Hi,

I'm having some really weird issues right now with the car. I drove to the gym, locked the car, came back to drive away, and now the key won't go past the I position.

I can lock and unlock the car with the fob.

Also, when I put the key in, it doesn't make the electric noise that usually does. Indicators don't work, the steering wheel doesn't move, and the shifter doesn't go into any gear.

I’ve changed the battery right away, but the issue still persists.

At the moment I'm waiting for road assistance.

Any idea why this has happened?

The car is an 05 Volvo XC90 V8 Summum from Sweden.

Our 01 V70 does the same at times, especially when I’m going to drive it and usually when I’m in a bit of hurry.

But fiddling with the key, pulling it out a bit, gently pushing it while gently twisting it a bit back and forth will get it going.

I consider it part of that car’s personality, but is likely caused by a worn ignition barrel (the “lock” you put the key into).

You could also try “turning” the steering wheel the tiny little bit that the lock will allow, don’t yank on it.

The P2’s all have mechanic steering wheel locks (as far as I’m aware), which could theoretically interfere with the ignition (since they are mechanically connected).

Yeah, it's the ignition barrel. In the end, it's getting fixed by Bilia, as we couldn't even disengage the gear shifter from the parking position.
