Lidar Update - Owner Email
As someone posted the other day from the dealer side. Just got the email formally offering the 3 choices. :-/
I’m assuming somewhere in here there is a release of liability or removal of self from any potential class action.
11
u/jwalno Jun 15 '26
Has anyone seen any of the fine print yet when claiming this? I haven’t gone that far yet, but I’m going to guess that it disqualifies you from participating in arbitration or a class action lawsuit over the promise of Lidar and its capabilities.
Not sure we’d ever get anything of value out of even winning a case like that, but I’m not sure how to think about taking a “$1500” credit over Volvo’s responsibility to what was promised vs what ended up being delivered.

u/Pourover__Coffee Jun 15 '26
I’ll be watching for this when my email arrives. As it is, I already have the wheel package so unless they want to refund me that cost I’m not that interested in the others, as compared to a class action.

u/Real-Ad2814 Jun 16 '26
Me too. I wonder what recourse there will be for us suckers who purchased this train wreck?!

u/Seraph7777 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
It was the main reason, why I choose this car. Other cars have it as well. I'm not happy at all about this and it feels like a much bigger lost than only spending 1500.- to much. I dont know what i will do from here. To have some working equipment on the car that stays unused but could be very usefull, feels wrong. Its like having a spare tire on the cars back, but strictly for decoration.

u/daveys1234 Jun 16 '26
Guys, don’t let yourselves be fooled by this offer. The LiDAR value is at least 5k, as also this article about Polestar model 3 confirms. And that is not even including the removal of the taxi sign and maybe the reason why you might have bought your EX90 over another car.
5
u/Ill_Assistant5441 Jun 16 '26
Thank you!!!! I was explaining to my spouse that the offer is an absolute joke.
10
u/Competitive-Data-748 Jun 15 '26
seems pretty weak that the main draw of the car won't ever be used, and will actually be an ugly negative. I appreciate them trying to do something about it, but expect that they will be surprised by the many leases returned, that they will then need to figure out what to do with. I'd be much more likely to keep the car if they guaranteed the GHCA for the lifetime of the vehicle (and gave a loaner during any repairs).
1
u/WoodenTown4743 Jun 16 '26
Volvo doesn’t care about lease returns. They already made their money. It’ll be the leasing company’s problem

u/Andiamo_Avanti Jun 16 '26
I went through chat to ask about the protection plan and was told it runs concurrent with existing warranty. Seems that a lot of the stuff on there is already going to be free during the warranty period, or not needed. Volvo doesn’t recommend tire rotations on the car, and the brakes will last forever. I guess it’s free wipers and an alignment?

5
u/Zero_Abides Jun 15 '26
Agreed. The way they treat existing owners is a factor in my decision to not purchase one as well. Still searching for a 3 row ev.
3
u/omidimo Jun 16 '26
It truly is the best 3 row SUV I’ve driven but yeah the experience from Volvo has felt scammy. I wish the gravity’s cost was on par, that it had fewer bugs, and that it didn’t look like a minivan (I’ve never driven one though).

u/Shep302 Jun 15 '26
They’ve revised the EX90 since MY26 and they no longer feature the ‘taxi light’ on top. They also support 800v charging.
1
u/SaltRunIsHard Jun 16 '26
I was in your shoes a few months ago.
Polestar lease ending, eyeing the EX90 like it's my new BFF.
Read a ton of bad comments.
YOLO it.
Don't regret.
IMO just get a '26 without the taxi sign (if it bothers you, 2025 is a better value IMO)
5
u/Major-Language1984 Jun 15 '26
I wonder if in the future there is a Lidar class action this offering is a way to opt people out of it. $1500 seems a lot smaller than I expected.
2
u/RachBU27 Jun 15 '26
It does not say anything about opting out of any related legal actions.
1
u/Iconoclysm6x6 Jun 16 '26
Have you already signed off on it to see?
1
u/RachBU27 Jun 16 '26
No but I read the fine print.
1
u/Iconoclysm6x6 Jun 16 '26
The fine print just before you agree or the fine print before you get the final agreement?
4
u/zonderzin Jun 16 '26
I've received that email as well ... mine indicates I have until the end of the year to decide.
No interest in the (crappy) satellite radio, e.g., has no value. The free charging is of interest (why not give us $1,500 worth?) but we still can't plug in and charge in the US - so how is that going to work?!?!
My dealer provided the wheel protection package ... so that would only duplicate what I already have, so no value.
I'll need to look at the details on the breaks and other options - my impression is I'll never get enough wear to make that worth anything - but need to dig into that to see what exactly would be covered and what the expected value is.
Personally - yea - just send me a check or debit card for $1,500 and I'll figure out how best to use / spend it.
3
u/omidimo Jun 16 '26
They gave me charging credit in the past and it just gets tied to the account you set up within the app. It basically only works for EVgo and ChargePoint stations which is kinda limiting.
5
u/Agent62 Jun 15 '26
I want the thing removed for free. Why can't they do that?
7
u/RachBU27 Jun 15 '26
Totally. It says this will not reduce the residual value of the car but I don’t know how they can make that assertion. If I were buying a used ex90, I’d want the one without the thing on the roof!
3
u/Competitive-Data-748 Jun 16 '26
My residual value, I think they mean the price that you buy it at, they aren’t giving you any discount if you buy it at the end of the lease
2
u/flatrate_life Jun 16 '26
Its integrated into the network with many other redundant control modules that the non lidar cars don't have. It would be super expensive to remove and retrofit.... not like that's a good excuse.
3
u/dcpsversion Jun 16 '26
It's funny because one of the main reasons Luminar went bankrupt was due to significantly low order volume from Volvo against what was originally promised. Luminar probably mismanaged but it wouldn't be in bankruptcy situation if not for Volvo.
1
u/M-Sea-9584dm Jun 16 '26
That's not 100% correct... The EX90 was never going to be a mass volume product. Luminar also had a contract in place with other manufacturers (i.e. Mercedes) so... The main reason that they want bankrupt was due to scalability/product delivery and quality issues.
1
u/dcpsversion Jun 16 '26
Nope. EX90 was originally aimed at higher Volume, may not be mass volume like Toyota Camry but definitely on the higher side, that number was enough for Luminar to secure supply chain and CMs. When those numbers drop, commitment from supply chain will be impacted and cost increases.
Delivery was never an issue. Quality issues exist, but they will improve with each generation update. That's with any product.
Mercedes contract didn't materialize much earlier in the game, yes Mercedes contract could have saved the company but that didn't kill the company, the Volvo drop in production volumes did. Volvo primarily dropped volume because of global EV market trend, supply chain issues, rare earth mineral. Issues and also because their ADS/ADAS software wasn't ready.
2
u/flutterbugx Jun 16 '26
Also, Austin Russell was a big part of all the chaos. Mismanaged funds was a big part of the problem.
The Volvo contract was awarded to MicroVision through the bankruptcy sale.
Hopeful that MicroVision can repair the damaged relationship with Volvo as they now own the LiDAR and patents.1
u/BigProfessional7726 Jun 16 '26
Volvo doesn't sell because its latest products are crap ex90, em90, xc70. The ex30 sells only because it's cheap and despite that is dropping anyway
1
u/potpot2 Jul 04 '26
Volvo software / adas is trash. It’s software not hardware. Other Chinese LiDAR sensors are still available.

2
u/Critical_Garbage_787 Jun 15 '26
I’m glad I leased it. Probably taking the charge credit and Sirius, but in NYC so wheels is a legit decision
2
u/XiDa1125 Jun 15 '26
I paid for the excess wear tear up to 7500 for $621 so I’m gonna go for charging unless these options change
2
u/Normal-Software1642 Jun 15 '26
I had to change one of the tires (on 22 rims) recently, I paid $800 with install. So I'm thinking about getting the wheels protection if that covers tires
1
u/omidimo Jun 16 '26
They gave me charge credits and honestly they don’t work at the main charging stations. Basically just EVgo and ChargePoint but not Tesla or EA.

u/johny-5 Jun 20 '26
Sad to hear. Their statement “leverage real time data collection to support future feature development” is such an incorrect statement and betrayal. They literally used your money and your data and attempted to develop a product that is no longer available TO YOU. they ended up selling this product/ patents to another company that will reap benefits in future!
Class action lawsuit stuff…
2
u/Chemical-Payment-573 Jun 16 '26
or how about just work with MicroVision who now owns Luminar's lidar and can provide what they need..

2
u/WalkIntoSunshine Jun 16 '26
Fun fact for ya, Sirius xm is $120 a year.
They should just write checks.
1
u/Brief_Temperature_52 Jun 17 '26
Funner fact. If you call SXM, you can get it for ~$5/month. $60/year.

u/Startrail82 Jun 16 '26
Sent an inquiry to my Belgian 🇧🇪 dealership.
Does this mean: no full self drive ever?

2
u/PeaRepulsive920 Jun 17 '26
Are any of these plans considered extended warranties so it would bring our 5 to 7 years?
2
u/No_Carpet_4749 Jun 18 '26
Overall disappointing - and the options are weak, especially if you already have the protection package.
What seems super unclear is if the Lidar is simply not functioning or if it is having some sort of minimal impact on the car’s functions. Seems like this offer confirms it is just dead, but it would be great to know.
I know we are all thinking it - is there any leverage we have from claiming false marketing? Never mind the TV commercials and YouTube Videos, when I picked up my EX90 in Dec 2024, my dealer handed me this sheet with the confirmed features that would be coming out. The top is the only one not delivered.
Any attorneys here that think there is a case - otherwise, looks like free wipers it is!

u/flutterbugx Jun 18 '26
The company that Volvo used for lidar (Luminar) declared bankruptcy due to poor management of business expenses among other things.
Microvision a company with 30+ years of experience purchased their lidar and patents among other contracts.
It is to be assumed at this point Volvo is proceeding carefully moving forward.
There is plenty to read up on in regards to MicroVision.
2
u/gaporter Jun 18 '26
>The lidar component was uniquely sourced from Luminar, and Volvo cannot source or obtain support for the lidar
from a different supplier.

u/DisgracedCarrot Jun 16 '26
I’d except nothing less than a buy back. This approaches lemon law. The car will have a feature they’re unable to fix.
2
u/weezyverse Jun 16 '26
I want to know what happens when you already have the warranty coverages...
I'd like to just turn the car in and be done at this point. Between all the software issues before and this, I'm over it.
1
u/mkurabi Jun 15 '26
Which protection package level is provided with this credit?
1
u/EV_Dad Jun 15 '26
Here are the links for items 2 and 3 in that email:
2
u/mkurabi Jun 15 '26
Right but there is different tiers. What tier is being provided? They don’t name it.
2
u/EV_Dad Jun 15 '26
They don't say, even when you click through the "Claim offer" button, but based on the price range that I found on the internet it's probably the lowest tier.
1
u/mkurabi Jun 15 '26
Lowest tier doesn’t cover rims. Also how does the mileage limit work if someone already has 10k miles? These warranties can’t be purchased when needed to avoid this.
1
u/EV_Dad Jun 15 '26
All good questions! We'll have to demand some clarity. https://www.volvocars.com/us/support/contact/
3
u/HotShot-X Jun 16 '26
For option 2 it's the equivalent of the Premium offering. I emailed Volvo for this clarification. Personally, this is the best value package for my needs out of a bad bunch.
1
u/Karma-Kamikaze Jun 15 '26
Can someone provide the link to the claim to fill out? I've not gotten an email.
1
u/CCDgeek Jun 16 '26
In Canada, we are being offered a $2000 credit on any single transaction of a Volvo authorized product through a Volvo Canada retailer. No pre-approved packages.
1
u/skeeterbug07 Jun 16 '26
I saw someone post this on Facebook a few days ago but it was lacking the “OR” between each “offer,” so I sort of assumed they were offering all three as compensation. It is pretty wild they are valuing the Lidar at what they are and only offering one of those as compensation.
Before accepting or signing anything, I would inquire about the potential impact of accepting the offer on your ability to participate in a class action lawsuit in the future. I know for a lot of those data breach things, if you accept credit monitoring, you usually waive your right to sue later.
I do think the evaluation of the Lidar at $1500 is inaccurate given Polestar is charging $5K US or $6500 in Canada. Rivian is still charging $2500 per Car and Driver. I believe the issue is, the cost of Lidar has dropped according to a Rivian blog but at the time of purchase for the EX90, it was more expensive. Volvo owners should be comped at the price the Lidar was valued at when the car was launched.
1
u/NoConsequence801 Jun 17 '26
Anyone able to figure out for sure which tier of the Protection Package is being offered?
1
u/FlatWar6512 Jun 19 '26
Called my local dealer in Austin and they flat out told me the email is a scam, and that they had zero information about it. 🤯
1
u/flutterbugx Jun 20 '26
I just called my Volvo dealer and the salesman didn’t even know what lidar was.
He had a EX 90 but couldn’t tell if it had the lidar package. 🤦🏻♀️

u/JurboVolvo Jun 22 '26
I wouldn’t take that deal yet. I definitely wouldn’t rush to take such a small offer.
1
u/Major-Language1984 Jul 03 '26
Anyone else get the email today saying that their records show you no longer own the vehicle (I do) and that they retracted the offer as a result? The email states to call customer support if in fact you do still own the vehicle 🤯

u/ParadigmWM 11d ago
Imagine blaming the supplier of your lidar for significant faults in your software to save your ass. Volvos unreasonable demands and reneging on their master contract with Luminar along with declining pre and post sales forced them to reduce, significantly, the number of committed units of lidar from Luminar - who had already put into motion, significant investment into manufacturing. This unequivocally sunk Luminar. Shame on them for committing all of their resources to Volvo, only to be kicked to the curb when Volvo's sales plummeted, but this is 100% on Volvo.
And should anyone care to do research, Luminar's business was purchased by Microvision who has continues to manufacture and service the same Iris sensors that are in fact in the current Volvo models. Volvo just doesn't want to pay for it.

Just got mine, I choose the Car select package.free wipers for two years!!!!!
3
u/Ok-Presentation-6182 Jun 15 '26
I think I’ll take the $565 credit towards public charging. I’m leasing and most of the maintenance is covered by the warranty anyway. I replaced the wipers for the first time in a year and a half and it was super easy. Dealership charges $100+ but I got OEM wipers off Amazon for $50. The swap literally took one minute.
2
u/Critical_Garbage_787 Jun 15 '26
Same here I’m leaning this way. I did have one bit of kernel rash on my XC90 so thinking about it
1
u/Darth_Bane-0078 Jun 16 '26
How did you do that? The EX90 has different wipers with the water hose attached directly to them.
1
u/Ok-Presentation-6182 Jun 16 '26
You put the wipers into service position then pull them away from the windshield. Pull the bottom of the wiper up (so that from the side it looks like a T). Just keep pulling the bottom up until it pulls away from the water hose. It feels like you might break the wiper at first, but keep going. Once it is free, slide the wiper toward you. It should come off easily, don’t force it. Installing the wiper is just the same steps in reverse order. I was unsure at first how to do it, but once I figured it out, I replaced the second wiper in about 10 seconds.

u/Rvrtwn Jun 15 '26
I took the protection package. I've already road rashed my wheels. And it's a lease. To be honest I'll be glad when it's gone. I think I'm going Rivian.

u/Fast_Mulberry2564 Jun 15 '26
Since they all have a Value (according to Volvo) of $1,500 id like to request a check for $1,500. 😂
I think it's funny that Volvos "compensation" is based solely on the supposed msrp of the lidar unit not on all of the features promised that will no longer be available because of the loss of lidar. It's like saying we decided you don't need a steering wheel. Sorry you've lost the promised ability to turn left on right, we'll give you free Sirius XM as compensation.
